I have the Denon DCD-720AE in balck with 32/192 DAC and i bought it in May 5th of 2018 for 279 euros the 9 euros was for the shipping and it sounds GREAT
Too bad Denon discontinued it and replaced it with DCD-600NE and it lacks headphones output jacket
Cool comparison, I've been wondering about this myself. I recently retrieved my 1998 Sony XA-20ES cd transport from the basement and hooked it up. It's built like a truck, super solid beatiful build and sold for like 700$ back then. But the DAC is so outdated... It does not offer coaxial unfortunately but I am using toslink to connect it to my Marantz amp with a built in AKM4490 DAC chip. But I reckon there is more to bring out of this masterpiece of a cd transport with an external better DAC, a DIP to improve jitter in the toslink and to replace the poor fixed power cord. Re-HiFi! 🙂
Would be nice if the Khadas came in a nice but simple case like yours.
do you have video of khadas sound test? thanks
Thank-you for doing this video. Glad I found your channel.
Based on this fascinating review maybe you can help with a question nobody seems to be able to answer. The kind of warm, somewhat veiled sound you were hearing from the Denon is definitely my strong preference. I would like a DAC that sounds just like that but has a bit more bass extension than the sound card on my computer. Do you think the Musiland would be suitable?
Thanks for this comparison! Do you think there is anything to be gained from using just the transport mechanism from the Denon, and the optical out to the DAC, or will any transport mechanism, for example a DVD player connected to the DAC, player do??
Thank you for your review. I have a Denon DCD595 purchased about 20 years ago and currently facing the dilemma you have just posed. Do I get a Schiit Modi 3 or just soldier on with my DCD595?
Think I’ll get a Schiit.
clip the caps on the outputs of the denon....you will get better highs
I want to hear it head to head. It's the only way.
I loved what you said at the end there, so true about electronics in general, excellent video:-)
So, since dacs have gotten so much better, and they are built into most CD players, could I not just buy a new CD player at the 300-500 range and skip buying an external dac like the modi 3? Would a topper d30 or modi really improve the sound at that point?
Really nice comparison man 👏
Great job on indicating how far DAC's have progressed and that you can NOW use an inexpensive DAC in a high-end system! I am experiencing great sound with a (newer) Schiit Modi Multibit DAC and very impressed. Cheers!
I have thought about this as well!
I have pioneer Elite cd/dvd/Sacd player from the 90s used to he 1200 dollars got it for 50 dollars.
It sounds so much better Than my macbooks dac.
If the source is a cd ofc.
Clarity and great vocals are the pros of cd.
With vinyl you need to buy a 200 dollar cartridge to get good vocals.
My mac is saved by high res audio and vinyl rips played with kodi media player.
Its a great player and free software.
Try the new DCD-600NE. $300.00. Different ballgame.
Hi - a real fascinating video; thanks for taking the time to share your idea. After watching this, would it be fair to say that I could pick up any 'cheap' brand name Disc player that has a digital out (Optical or co-axial), and run it through a Khadas Tone Board or a Schiit Modi 3 DAC, and I could get sound quality that would rival an expensive CD player?
I'm on a budget and can't spend $300+ for an audiophile-grade CD player. Could I get, for example a new (refurbished) TEAC, Onkyo or LG dvd/cd player with a digital out, and pair it with a good dac (thinking about the Schiit Modi) and save a few hundred dollars, while getting decent CD sound quality? I am sure that there are other novice audiophiles on a budget who are wondering the same. I'd appreciate anyone commenting on this question. Thanks again for the excellent video.
What a load of twaddle.
idk an $80 dac vs $80 cd vs a bare board that would probably be $150-$200 as a slick finished product isn't exactly the fairest fight....
Hi , i would like to know about the box for your Khadas Tone Board, where did you get it? is it a DIY box? I juste purchased the Khadas its a great card and I really want to protect it. thanks for your answers.
Why would I buy Chinese? keep safe.
Thanks Steve! My 1986 DCD 1500 recently decided it wouldn’t play a few of my CDs. Took it apart, cleaned as best I could and the issue continues. I bought a DCD-600NE 2 weeks ago. Much better sound, as one might expect. Anyway, your comments about the simplicity of this unit caught my ear. It has the optical out, so I might try an outboard DAC...The remote is enormous !
I use my Yamaha Natural Sound DVD C900 as my main CD player only..am i doing wrong or is a DVD player as good as a dedicated CD player.
It seems a good number of people are getting defective models based on the reviews. Myself included. New out of the box it wouldn't read any CD, including new ones. Looks nice... didn't play CDs. Kind of a problem.
Good morning, i own a denon DVD/HDCD 5000 and i am thinking to sell and buy a newer player dcd600 or 800.
What would you suggest?
Keep it or sell it?
Should i see a significant improvement to the soundstage?
Cds rock. If music is mixed and mastered well, it sounds great on the format
Would the DAC inside this player be better than using a schiit modi3?
I was looking at the Yamaha cd-S300 is it any good
I have that CD PLAYER now. I bought it this year. The quality of sound is very high and that player is not expensive. I agree that DENON have horrible remote controlers - to many buttons!
skip Bayless long lost brother
I still love CD’s and I don’t see that changing. I love vinyl too. When I buy new vinyl, I record it to CD while it’s still fresh and it sounds great. Better (usually) than the manufactured CD release. The sad bit is that the continual brainwashing of the public that somehow CD’s are inferior and sound like shit has been effective. No one seems to care that the format is slowly dying due to inattention and a conscious desire by hardware manufacturers let it die in favor of non physical product. Some of these manufacturers also own record labels and would prefer everything to go to streaming. Much more profitable.
But the CD is slowly becoming an orphan product. Abandoned. The spec was never allowed to evolve. Recordable CD’s for some inexplicable reason never caught on. No one seems to care about recording anything anymore on physical media. DVD and hard disc recorders just faded away. VHS recorders are gone. It seems like the only company that bothers to make a CD recorder is Tascam, and the current mk II generation is a cheapened to the max version of its predecessor which was far better. Audio companies used to strive to make their products better and better year after year, but in the CD recorder category, this is no longer the case. I can foresee a time when they won’t even be offered anymore, much like the DVD/HDD recorder.
I’m a musician and I still use CD recorders to record or master my own music and to make mix CD’s. There is no other physical recording format that still has a large base of installed, compatible machines in many homes and cars. (Although all that seems to be slowly disappearing and most new cars don’t even offer CD players or CD/HDD players.) But I’m puzzled as to how audiophiles in particular seem uninterested at the current state of affairs regarding having a machine in your system that can record to physical media. Many amps don’t even offer record outs anymore. What the hell happened? Why have home recording devices died? Many people used to have reel to reel recorders integrated with their setups. Then cassette decks got better and better and everyone had those. Now it’s like nothing. How has this become unimportant to so many?
Currently along with the Tascam CD-RW900SL and 901SL, I use old units made in the late ‘90’s that are of superb quality. These were originated (I think) by Pioneer and then rebranded and altered a bit for pro studio use by Fostex and HHB. The Fostex CR-200 and CR-300 (CDR-850 for HHB and they also did their version of the CR-200) are excellent machines that have a pro build and super high quality DACs. These machines are mostly super reliable but some are starting to show their age and they get quirky. But these are late 90’s machines! Where are the new machines? Where is an upgrade to the format? Or even just a high quality continuation of the current spec? I’m curious about what others think about this.
Not a word on how it’s sounds.🤨
Hey man.... I got a cheap $130 Sony STR-DH190. Sort of don't wanna go all out on a CD player that cost more than the speakers and the Daytons T652-AIR that are run into it.
So many useless talk But Haven’t talk about the “sound” at all.
So many bullshit talk But Haven’t talk about the “sound” at all.
I've still got my old Adcom cd player. Sadly it got dropped and doesn't work real good, ie not at all. It's pretty old now, I bought it used over 20 years ago, but I like to hang on to it. Got a Marantz 6006 as replacement...
for $300 i hope your paying for an otherwise great $250 DAC inside that CD player :-/
Just a bit of research into there marketing shows "AL32 Processing" which smoothens out the "blocky" digital signal into smoother waveform at 192kHz (32-bit?). I can definitely see how it will make it sound better, but that makes me think if there's any DAC's that have that technology already backed in and i just never noticed/checked? Welp!! down another rabbit hole i go
How long does it take for the Denon CD player to switch on?
Steve, send me a list of CD'S you want to fly out the door and lets make a deal..!
Dont throw them away, ill,buy them..! ZOMG..!
I bought this CD player 4 days ago and hooked it to my legendary NAD3020i amplifier to push a pair of Warfedale Diamond 5 speakers. The sound given by this new CD player and coming out of these 20 years old speakers are quite different from what I have been listening to during the past 20 years. In fact, this new CD player with its 32bit/192Khz Dac tells me that I had missed a lot of lovely musical signals in the past days. Now, my collection of over 400 compact disc seem to have their new lives.
Duck off pma 520 lol
Super the best denon japan i love canton germany
I had bought a Denon DCD520 cd player. After using it for one and a half year, the cd drawer could not open. The official reparing agent told me that they would charge HK$450 for checking fee and additional fees for the spare parts. Oh my God! The cd player just costs me HK$1,800 and the repairing service fees were inproportionately high. I would rather buy a new cd player ...... but another brand.
would you describe the sound of 520 as bright? If i go to 720 it will be more robust and warm?
what speakers do you use? Thanks
Does Denon dcd 520 play flac from CD-R?
