D'Addario Acoustic EXP String Review
Choosing Right Strings for your acoustic guitar | Best Strings For Acoustic Guitar
Acoustic Guitar String Shootout - Coated vs Phosphor Bronze vs 80/20 - D'Addario
The Ultimate Acoustic String Comparison - Extra Light vs Custom Light vs Light vs Medium
My next set of strings!
D'Addario the worst strings ever!
Well this seems to be the answer for all mahogany guitars that start with a really bassy sound. I played the mahogany Ibanez AW54CEOPN recently and it had a great blend of bass and brass. Supposedly it had the D'Addario EXP's on from the factory. No one knew whether they were the lights but they probably were. Sounded as good or better than guitars 3 times the price tag. I like the open pore look as well.
80/20 Bronze will give you a warmer tone than Phosphor Bronze.
what is gauge of the strings in this video ?
Great review on D addario EXP strings I’ve had elixir nanowebs strings on my guitar and in one week the coating just came off. D addario EXP last longer they last me 4 months which excellent.
I hate that plunky jangly noise that they put off.
These are my all time favorite strings I’ve tried them all too
In my experience, the EXP strings wear out (go dead) as quickly as any other strings. The only advantage they have is that for a guitar that is too bright, the EXP strings will dull it up a little bit. (The opposite of what this video says - at least on Martins and Guilds.) The plain strings that come in the EXP sets (16 or 17) are wimpy somehow, and I replace both the high E and the B strings with others (Ernie Ball - just because they are so available). I think Martin SP phosphor bronze strings are much better than coated strings for most acoustic applications.
12-54 would be a medium gauge. Light should be 10-47 I been into string instruments for over 50 Yrs. I'll stick with tried and true Martin strings
On my new US made Guild D20, these very same strings (EXP16) sound warmer than Martin SP strings - quite noticeably warmer, even than thicker Martin SP strings. I know this totally surprised me too! Taylor guitars always sound a bit too bright for my taste. But does that explain the difference in the way the strings sound on a Taylor vs a Guild? Beats me! I wonder how they will sound on my Martin. I intend to find out soon.
Elixirs are D'addarioswith a coating. Dah! Taylors have a brighter tone because they put elixirs on all their guitars!
Blue Clip Pick are the best picks
I like the Daddario exp 13's. I string most of my acoustics with that. I like the Martin lifespans also. Seems like that Taylor has rosewood back and sides to my ears. Rosewood is no where near as warm as mahogany back and sides. I do like the sound of rosewood though especially the Martin d35 . Rosewood has a quicker sharper tone and response to my ears. Perhaps your right that these strings are to bright for that particular guitar.
If you were to put mediums on that Taylor it would sound a lot better.  I only use Daddario on my Martin and they sound awesome.  Taylor guitars are to bright sounding for me.   I found after playing my new strings for about 3 hours then they break in enough and play like they should and are made to sound.  I play at least an hour a day I find I get to the point I change my strings about once a month or less as they start getting deadpan around then,  Thanks for the video.
just wanted to ask if those strings are soft
Those strings don't last long
What is name of song that you play 3:05? :)
Buyer beware of D'Addario 9-Gauge Strings. Months ago I bought a 10-pack of D'Addario 9's for my guitar students at school. 3 Packs of those strings contained a defective string. The smallest wound string had half the wind missing and were unusable. I mailed the defective strings with their packages back to D'Addario complaining and asking for replacements. They never replied. I just opened a new 10-pack of the same strings I bought from a new vendor months later, and the first two packs I have opened have had the same problem with the same string. I have now lost twenty dollars on defective string sets from D'Addario (would have been over 35 dollars had I paid retail). I will personally never buy D'Addario 9's again. Shame really. They were my favorite.
FFSIt's pronounced "DUH-DAR-EEO"
Please mention the ideal guage of strings when reviewing individual guitar models

Hellow Sir ! , I appreciate the way you make us know about many things which we haven't heard anytime we are thankful for that . Sir had some questions about the cleaning of the fretboard / strings / matte body guitar a specific oil or somewhat for the maintenance purpose do let me know when it should be done the duration , sir the humidity fluctuations ! Does the guitar affects ? and also wanted to know that many of them are saying that when we are not playing the guitar untune (overnight) it but some refuses saying that the trust rod will imbalance so what is the correct one should l untune ? , For " Yamaha FS80C " which strings are better Hope you understand what l wanted to say waiting for your reply ! Thankyou

what would you recommend for 3/4 guitar
Ok so I was very surprised when you said that set A were the coated strings because they were my 2nd choice in sound. For me, set B sounded the brightest and had the best clarity! As for set C, I was sure they were the coated strings because they sounded dull and flat to me with very little ring to them! I would chose B for sound BUT if set A are the coated strings, I would probably go with them because of the coating and close to the sound of set B
B was my choice
I came here for a little bias confirmation. Let me explain that I own a Fender dreadnought cut away that I love mostly because of it's one of a kind finish and feel. I always had the Phosphor Bronze on it because that's what it came with, but I never really liked the sound. It had a harsh and brittle quality to it (I blame my Laminated maple top mostly), where I wanted a warmer rounder sound that would still project well. I recently changed to Elixir coated nanoweb strings and I got a lot closer to what I have been aiming for. They definitely tamed the harshness and it is still pretty bright. They are a different brand of course, and I may try the D'Adarrio EXP's next time, just because I like the brand for my 2 electrics.
I forgot you were testing strings!. I was enjoying your great playing on the acoustic guitar! Those EXP strings sound very good to me. A close 2nd would be the 80/20 Bronze.
B and C sounds awful
Can I put D'Addario XL ECG23 (Flat Wound) Chromes Stings (10-48) on an acoustic guitar? Would it still sound like an acoustic, but a little warmer?
I like Set A better. The most balanced and moderate. oh now I know it's the most expensive set The sets sounded progressively brighter. Great playing and recording, Justin!
A C B for me ‍♂️
I could hear the difference between bright and warm but not coated/uncoated. I have studio monitors btw some of you may have difficulty hearing on laptop or phone speakers. It's not terribly subtle, not too noticeable either though. Without a side by side I wouldn't know the difference.
Anyone know which strings the Yamaha FSX 800C comes with from factory? The guitar sounded great until the first string change. I changed the old strings out with D'Addario EXP 11's. Now it sounds very tinny with almost no balance on the highs and lows. Gonna put the old strings back on until I can figure this out.
Thomas shelby can definitely play guitar
Hi Justin U might want to do A New comparison. All new strings! The Xs The NB ect. The company may help you with it. I'm positive they will. FYI Check " Martin String " Video THE BEST EVER. Guy never moves, same chords. The Editing was insanely Great. Thanks
thank you sir im having dilemma these days but u helped a lot
awful rendition in low res video here on youtube, terribly saturated espcially when strumming. I recommend the high res versione of the file on Justine's website.
It's completely subjective. Ask 10 people and you will get 10 different opinions.
the last one was obviously phosphor bronze
Could SO hear the difference. Thank you!
A) - very bright but flat (EXP 19 Coated) B) - more even subtle tone (80/20) C) - very warm (Phosphor Bronze) - (this one was my fav sound wise for some reason.)
Very cool shootout. It’s been a long time but I’d like to see if the hi res files are still on the site. I was surprised that set c wasn’t the coated and without giving it a lot of thought yet, I think it might be partly the order that they were played in. Having the coated come after the 80/20s might have thrown me off but set c sounded brighter than set a. The daddario coated pho’s bronze and in that gauge is my string of choice. So a perfect video. I guess it’s also a valid point to use coated for stored guitars, but my understanding is that it’s the oils in your fingers when playing that has the most corrosive effect. If you clean strings before store guitar, I don’t know how much corrosion there will even be sitting safely in the case.

Custom lights sound awesome. I might be biased cause those and Nickle brass/bronze (I think they are called retros?) are my go toos for my style. I tune the lights to Eb cause I have some issues with my hands and they aren’t that strong these days. Thanks for the review 7 years down the line it still helps me make decisions!
I noticed you didn't include super light 9 gauge acoustic strings. It seems they are hard to find. My fingers want the lightest strings as I can find. Do they exist?
Thanks a lot
Thank you! Very helpful. Mucho Gracias
I used to think medium gauge will give you balls, but seems like it gives you dullness
I only use medium or heavy gauge strings on solid mahogany or koa or any other hard wood topped guitars not really necessary on spruce or cedar topped guitars but on hard wood topped guitars they need the thicker strings and they love it
Excellent video. Thanks
What song is 2:35 from?
Custom Light
Who cares about your personal gear list?
custom light for me .thanks send me 3 sets
Acoustic life looked way different back then
I dont know I like the sounds of the light and extra light
I have 6 yrs old well maintained guitar But it doesnot have truss rod. Can i use 0.12 guage for acoustic
Extra lights and custom lights are the best
metal or nylon strings?
Surprisingly the extra lights sound best to me. With medium or heavy strings you can tune down further though.
Martin 12 medium light phosphor bronze has been my go to on my martin 00 guitars for quite some time. If you have several acoustics and use for diff types of music its nice to keep a range. A Gibson dove would sound great with medium, whereas I would get better tone I am looking for on a SJ-200 with custom lights. Different woods give each guitar unique lighter or richer sound and playing around with string gauges to offset that can put you in a very nice goldilocks zone.
Extra Light for me, like the sound
Is this Bronze 80/20 or Phosphor Bronze 92/8 ?
