Guitar Strings Comparison (Ernie Ball vs. D'addario)
can anybody share which strings does Al di meola uses on electric ? and I heard that he uses exl110 so will u suggest the regular ones or the nyxl ones ? I love his tone.
Which strings do you use?
Elixirs user here - never had any issues with them - feel better and slinky-er than other brands, feel high-end and loose their tension and pitch after a long time of use - only broke maybe 5-6 high Es since I've been using them. They don't rust, they do not oxydate and they do have beautiful round tone. Will always be an Elixir user, just because you get a lot for the price you pay. But this is just my opinion (not thrashing the other brands - they are good, just not for me)
What type of guitar is that?
I have guitars with Ernie Ball, D'Addario, and Elixir strings now. Other than the Elixirs lasting a bit longer I don't hear or feel a significant difference. I started playing before the internet and for years I used D'Addario because my local shop sold them as two packs for $5.00.
I would love to see a comparison with Dean Markley strings. They rebrand their strings for others like Music Store chains so that sell them for as much as 25% cheaper.
No brainer, D'Addario. Ernie Ball is like the strings you use when you first start playing. I used to use them as well, they're the cheapest, the colorful packaging and catchy string gauge names they have makes it easy to get drawn in but otherwise, they're junk. Spend the extra money and get yourself D'Addario, specifically the NY XL's which are probably the best strings on the market currently.
Amazon sells 6 packs of Ernie Ball for a decent price. I’m not sure about D’Addario but I can’t imagine they don’t.
I personally like Ernie ball more because of the quality and how they feel good even when I’m tuned to standard all the way down to b standard where as d’addario I can only go down two whole steps
I use regular D'addarios (not NYXL) and I'm perfectly happy with them, broke a string only once over many years. Had to try EB once (D'addario was out of stock) and I managed to break a string within hours.. and then another one next day (same string, other pack). I'm sure it's just bad luck but I never bought EBs again.
Bass player. I use DR personally, but between D'addario and Ernie Ball, I liked how Ernie Ball felt more. To me, that's more important than availability and price. Yes, DR is more expensive but I know for a fact that I'm going to like them.
I switched to D'addario at like 14 or 15 and never looked back. On the rare times i've had to borrow another friends strings and owe em back (at a gig typically) and it's Ernie ball they've alway gone dead in weeks. That being said, I have heard Rotosound are good considering they're cheap.
with my vision I appreciate having the strings separated and clearly labled.
Fun Fact : PRS has D'Addario make their strings and then doubles the price.
I buy single strings in a 12-pack for each gauge. Can build my own custom set of gauges that way, and is a lot cheaper (even compared to 10-packs of pre-made sets).
im not too picky.. im shopping around.. but i often end up buying d'addarios.. but i really like to try something different at times.. strings i never buy though is elixir.. i fucking hate elixir strings.. then i rather buy NYXL if i wanna play coated strings but i seldom do.. Yeah im a freak.. my fav guitar is an old handmade Hagström Les Paul from 1972 in raw maghogny (no top) with handwound Seymour Duncan '59 wounded by seymour himself.. and a Kahler trem... i fucking love it... even though ppl often hate on kahler and trems on LP's in general...
I'm a loyal D'addario user but once I started playing live, I tried EB cobalts and those strings just made my tone so much better. They are a bit expensive so I'm back to D'addarios again for home playing.
Elixirs or bust... Ernie Ball and D'Addario are both trash in comparison!
angus young uses engie ball regular 9's so... yeah
I used to be picky about strings until i started playing a baritone. When most of the available strings can't even reach a 30" scale length, you start taking what you can get. That said - there's still a lot of awesome strings available like Stringjoy, but it mostly comes down to ordering custom sets.
7:35 was about to take my phone to the toilet but I felt guilty about spending too much time on YouTube sooooooo... checkmate sir 😂
is there a new set up required for a floating tremolo using same gauge as the XL's due to the tension difference?
I know it’s odd but I use these along with dimarzio x2n pickups on an Ibanez RGA and that guitar sang. I started using flats and thicker gauges for a finger workout to build calluses and then I grew to love the low string noise and the crazy tension cause it feels bouncy to me when alternate picking string to string. I’m not using half rounds on a Kiesel Aries with a very comparable set of their pickups.
The only problem with the NY XL strings is the NY part. Fcuk Nwe Yrok!
D'Addario strings suck
The only strings I use
I don't like this salesman who says "XL is the industry standard" unless he has the data to prove it. Just say it's your most popular string or something. Its sly.

Ernie Ball are smoother, warmer and easier to bend hence the name slinky. D'addario are stiff, more tension, harder on your fingers and wear your frets out.
EB feels better on the fingers to me, D’s have a tone I like better. EBs seems to have at least on spotted black string compared to years old Ds with no corrosion.
Ernie Ball provides better dynamic range.
My ears can't really tell the difference in this video, even through headphones. Having used both brands nearly equally over the last 30 years of gigging, I've found the Ernie Ball strings seem to break more often than D'Addarios. Another reason I prefer the latter is because they come in sealed, gas-injected packaging and therefore don't rust while sitting in storage.
I have been alternating both for many years and daddarios have more body, sound fuller to me and I think they last longer. both are great either.
I've used Ernie Ball for a few years but they don't last long and lose their flavor very quickly, D'addario is a brighter and safer option in my opinion. By the way, I usually play between jazz and rock, but I feel like they are very versatile.
I honestly can’t tell the difference between the two. I personally like Ernie Ball strings better bc each string is in its own package 😁
Daddario is more soft then the Ernie's, easy to bend, and Ernie strings feels a bit stickier to me, having problems when sliding.
Ernie ball have more tight gain and rounding.. in my ears
Siempre he usado Ernie Ball Slinky 80-20, y probé las DaDdario y ptm se oxidaron al mes de uso chsm
D addario more gain, I think
I love how cute the neck pickup sounds ha ha reminds me of old retro arcade games
daddario sound wayyyyy better no question
I use both of them. The Ernie ball sounds amazing when they're new but that tone last a few days Daddario sounds not so "alive" for me but they're more consistent if you don't sweat to much that tone can last a couple of months without problem.
I used d’adarrio for years. Never cared for Ernie ball. Once my kid started playing, I changed to elixir and Dean Markley Blackhawks. Don’t know why I didn’t get on board sooner. My kids hands will eat up a regular set of strings in 3 days. Get at least a month or so out of elixir and DM. The Dean Markleys sound closest to d’adarrio, but the elixirs stay crisp a tad longer. Both great. Never going back to 5$ strings.
daddarios have a thicker tone
To me there is no difference in sound I "ve used both of these sets and other guitar friends say the same to.
Anyone else like both? I use D'Adarrio 10-46 & Ernie Ball 11-48
Need more comparisons videos like this one
Ernie lover forever here, think I'll get the eagle tattooed on me🤘😂
