Acoustic String Comparison: 80/20 vs. Phosphor Bronze
Choosing Right Strings for your acoustic guitar | Best Strings For Acoustic Guitar
Acoustic Guitar "String" Comparison - 80/20 vs Phosphor Bronze vs Silk & Steel vs Flat Tops
D'addario Flat Tops EFT16 string review
Does String Gauge on Acoustic Make a Difference? 10's vs. 13's: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YpNv6Ma-KE
Good Job!
Thanks for the video! Great playing too. You played every song I wanted to hear!
Both sets of strings sound great on that guitar.
Thanks so much buddy you helped me and for sure many others to choose the right one.
Nice video bro! Really helpful till this day! I prefer phosphor
What model Martin? Great video man!
80/20 Bronze strings defenitely. More punch, more grit, clearer and less mellow. Thanks for the video!
Well, I just put some 80/20's on my guitar and really didn't care for the sound at all. After listening to this incredibly well done comparison it's clear as can be that I'll never buy 80/20's again. The 80/20's IMO were louder and brighter but lack the wonderful harmonics of the PB's. It's like the difference between glass and crystal. The PB's had beautiful string to string balance and work well as a set while with the 80/20's each string seems to be trying to out do each other. Thanks for making my string buying decisions a mute point! Also, that is some beautiful playing sir.
I just overpaid for some Elixir 80/20 custom lights and they're obnoxiously bright. Now I'm going to go pick up some Dadarrio PB's, I can't seem to find the right sound
Thanks for comparrison. Don't feel bad as most people mispronounce but... The apostrophe after the D in D'Addario means that it is pronounced Dee- A- ddario. Not Da- Dario.
What gauge 80/20?
Good comparison ... appreciate the effort to make it "apples to apples". And it's always great to hear someone half my age playing some Pink Floyd! I use phosphor/bronze on my smaller bodied guitar to "thicken" the sound, but prefer 80/20 on dreads so they're not so boomy.
I've recently switched to Curt Mangan 80/20 round core and love them.
I just bought the new D’addario XT (Phosphor bronze) and they are pretty awful. 80/20 sounds much more natural. There’s sort of muddy drony artifact in the phospors I really think is not good.
Great video. I searched because I'm trying to figure out which strings are better, 80/20 or phosphor bronze. From your video, they both sound the same. Maybe phosphor bronze last longer? I have a set of 80/20 Ernie Ball Earthwood on the guitar now, and they sound great. I'm going to try phosphor bronze next, but I'll wait until the 80/20s fade out.
Am I the only one who likes 80/20s more.
I preferred the 80/20s , but, then again, I use Martin 80/20s on my guitar (which is actually made of a darker tone wood than your D-28) There's something about the tone quality I prefer over Phosphor Bronze. It's all pretty subjective anyway...Thanks for doing the comparison.
I think it really depends mostly on what kind of style and tone you are trying to go for me personally as a finger picker I use phosphor bronze strings all the time because I feel like they sound more balanced and warm sounding whereas the 80/20 string sound more punchier which is kind of nice if you are a flat picker I feel like the highs are also more crisp and clear on the 80/20 but for me I don't want my eyes to be outstanding so I stick with the phosphor bronze strings
Would love to see a tutorial on "Day in the Life." That's a beautiful arrangement. Greater projection and articulation on 80/20 make sense with Martins, which are darker than Taylors. That's a gorgeous HD28. Generally if 80/20s are going to sound "vintage" and beautiful with balanced note separation and resonance, as they do here, also, dreadnought guitars are going to be the instrument they sound good on. This varies enormously, however! The PBs to my ear sounded best on the piece you played with rock chords. Less skilled players (like me) sometimes sound less skilled with the 80/20s, because there's little muddiness to conceal mistakes. PBs are reputed to be more "balanced" across the scale, so I was perhaps hearing more pronounced "mids". Certainly warmer on this guitar, but less projection and articulation. Thanks for superb playing. On one of the comparisons you sped up the PBs considerably, which suggests to me that they sound better banging out rock chords, and you adjusted the style accordingly.
I usually opt for the cheapest pack, but now i realise the specs are actually important
I have exactly the same t shirt

Bro which gauge for Yamaha F280 Please tell me!!!
Of the four, which one of them is easiest on the finger tips AND has the least finger squeak?
Well done 👏,, thank you
Amazing blues song
Phosphor bronze sound best for overall. Low end sounds more pronounced to me. Crisper sound all around.
Love this! Really eye-opening. The Phosphor Bronze sound warmest, and the Silk & Steel are remarkably less resonant, very flat sounding. Good info to have, thanks!
It would be interesting to add Martin Retro (Monel) strings to this very good comparison.
good video
Listening on studio monitoring headphones. Nice work on the consistency of the recordings and playing of each example. First two (80/20 Bronze and Phosphor Bronze,) are the least expensive and both have bright high tones. The 80/20 has more of a warmer mid and both are kind of lacking in the bottom end. If you're starting out there's nothing about these strings which will bother you and they're cheap. They also happen to sound great on hard top guitars. Great for a guitar that gets handed around or travels a bit rough. Silk and Steel costs more, have (from experience) a more forgiving feel but the high end is very understated. Low and mid tones are great. These are what I usually string my most lived in guitars with. There's something a bit less bright and tinny about them, the silk binding around the core takes the twanginess out of a guitar. Flat Tops are very good alrounders in terms of tonality. They also respond best to player finnese, the effects of muting, palming and harmonics are more pronounced, making bad players sound worse and good ones sound better. They're bright and dynamic and they're my choice for studio work or performing.
Great comparison - no waste-of-time idle chatting, good sound, good playing. Thanks.

This is perfect, thanks for uploading!
thanks for this and great playing, those silks have a sound for everything barring strumming!
Superb, thank you. You made my evening.
Thank you so much! I learned a lot, know what kind of strings I want, and really enjoyed your video
superb
This video needs to be on top of YT search becasue other similar comaprisons are too much talking.
0:27 vs 0:38 vs 0:50
Great comparison video! Finger picking 1 sounds like early fleet foxes.
Phosphor bronze all around
Thank you for literally doing what we came here for, letting us hear the difference. Ffs the amount of fastforwarding of talking done in the other videos I've found was insane.
Wait... what was he doing at the end? On his guitar after the harmonics I can’t see
Do they get like sticky or idk how to explain it but like the elixir they come coated and they are easier to slide and stuff and take a while to get black and ive bought some different strings and they are ok at first but like in 2 weeks they start to get black and it gets like “sticky” not really sticky but it makes more friction so it hurts ur fingers to play and they feel dry so just wondering cus i want to try them out but i dont want strings that will get black fast and cause alot of friction on my fingers
We sell them at crestwood music shop in kentucky!
I use the EFT16's too.
