Thank you. I have had a new 4000 sitting unused. Didn't want to tackle reading the manual. Finally, I thought that someone must have reviewed the camera on youtube - and viola!

while recording, has the camera ever just stopped? mine does. it doesn't die, it just stops recording. sometimes it only records a little while, but sometimes it does pretty well. it's the same one. (canon powershot a4000 is)

Yea I have this camera and the auto focus does not work at all when u film :/
I don't know about that camera, but I know that recording on almost any camera, auto-focus sucks. In one hand, the camera may constantly try to auto-focus. You're talking about constantly switching which is the focal point. On the other hand, the camera will decided that the wrong point is the one that needs to be focus always. Best is to set it to manual. Zoom in to a far way point, have the camera focus on it, and then zoom out. Depth of field is wide and everything is in focus.

This is a pretty dang good camera. Definitely of higher quality. I'd buy it over the cameras we have around the house (Just some normal digital cameras. lol) I like it.
