Haha. I went through all of this myself a couple of years ago.
This is what i recommend :
1) do not use an extender with this lens on a aps-c body, it's not worth the hit in Image quality, slower autofocus and forced ISO, the light is already dull in the UK, and f8 is just too slow!
2) Purchase Reikan focal, excellent piece of software. All lenses and lenses + extender combinations need to be carefully calibrated on a DSLR, if you don't do it then you are most certainly not getting the best out of your gear.
3) If you really want to use that combo, i would suggest getting a full frame camera, we have a tendency to always want more reach, but the results from a full frame sensor are just so much more pleasing, i did some Careful comparing between my 7d2 and 5d4 with that same lens and 1.4x and the 5d4 just blows away the crop sensor, you can hardly see a difference with the 1.4 attached on the 5d4.
4) i would recommend keeping your 100-400II for a great walk around lens and if finances let you : getting a used 300 or 400 2.8, these beasts are razor sharp and work much better with extenders.
5) I have learnt over the years that you get much better results learning to approach your subject, than getting a longer focal length.
Keep up the great work. Cheers
Sometimes i think, this is David Beckham or Jimmy Somerville with a camera
Hi Espen, In my experience the 7DMK2 and 100-400L II +1.4x iii are good companions for steady or relativly slowly moving objects. Of course 1.4X (and 100-400L II) is much better on fullframe but sometimes nearly 900mm is very good. Canon website states that the EF 1.4x iii is not compatible with the Canon EF 100-400 ii. It will work but the EF 1.4x ii is a better option.
Using the 100-400mm 4.5-5.6L IS II with the EF 2x II and 5DS, the results were a bit disappointing. Was thinking to try with the EF 1.4 III, but I’m a bit concerned now. Though, most think highly of the 1.4 III and 100-400 II combination.
Will get the 300mm 2.8L IS in few days. Perhaps the 2x II and 1.4x III will work much better when the lens is better too.
Great review I was thinking of buying an extender but think I will save my money. Thanks for the honesty!
My motto. There will always be a bird too far away. Either get closer or don't shoot.
I just ordered one to pair with my 100-400ii + M6 kit. The M6 handles higher ISO better and it also has 32.5MP so in theory the sharpness fall off shouldn't be as noticeable due to the increase in pixel density (it will still be there, but hopefully the results will be better). One thing the M6 struggles with is AF since it relies on purely Dual-Pixel AF, but if the subject fills the frame more, it has more to lock on to so again, in theory the extender should provide that extra reach to smaller subjects closer and improve AF performance. Once I have a chance to use it, I will update this comment on my findings in real world application since theoretical performance is not indicative of real world performance. At the very worst at least I'll have it for when I inevitably buy a full frame camera some day lol.
Update: Based on my limited usage so far, AF acquisition is a hair slower, but it's ability to lock focus is better for sure. Although relatively unscientific, out of 50 shots I am able to get closer to 45 shots w/1.4x and before it was closer to 40 shots in the same conditions. Overall sharpness is almost indistinguishable to the naked eye at F/8 as well. I think it was a worth while investment.
Is this extender worth it over the II?
Not sure why you'd want to use this TC on a Canon 7D II to shoot at f/8 at extreme ISO levels. Any fast action requires a faster shutter and that means higher ISO which deteriorates clarity or sharpness. The other thing is you MUST microfocus your camera for all lenses to correct for any back or front focus issues and this is no exception to this unless you shoot mirrorless. Might have been done before making this video. For sports action, I use the TC 1.4x III on my 70-200mm 2.8, including my 400mm 2,8 and works at f/4.0 great and very sharp images. I also use the 1DX2 which provides lower noise content over the 7Dii. I do have the 7Dii and use the Tamron 18-600mm for my general photography.
You got over £4.000 worth of photographic equipments
Hi Espen, I`ve just found you review and channel, looking for a price on the extender I want to sellhaha your review is excellent, and as I have the same setup ,found exactly all you said. It is not worth it for me ,even that I'm only amateur the loss of sharpness and speed is too much.I'll be watching your channel ! cheers @truepics48
This is why photographers need to be comfortable with MANUAL FOCUS
i used the 1.4x (III) and 2x (III)on my eos R6, i can not see any quality loss. on a 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6 L Is ii
I have an identical setup and the same results as you. Borderline not sure I want to use the extender at all. After watching this I decided to calibrate the lens with the teleconverter. Definitely improved and great results for closer subjects and good results further away. As you said I'm not going to put it on and forget it but It's a useful tool when needed.
I have the same set up as you, a great review and so very helpful, thanks.
i have a canon 1.4mm extender (same one )mark II but its back lens came out , do you know how to fix it ?
Hi the 1.4xlll is it ok with the canon 400 mm 5.6?
hello Espen! the 100-400 ii and the 1.4 iii are a great combo but you need fast shutterspeed.
don’t forget, the APS-C sensor size affects lens size AND aperture. The camera companies only talk about lens reach.
So when your 400 at 5.6 becomes f8 with the 1.4X added, it becomes even darker when you switch from full frame to the APS-C body.
Probably closer to f11. No wonder you can’t get good shots on dull days — or of moving subjects.
Tony Northrop has an excellent video comparing full frame to crop bodies and spends quite a bit of time showing how the aperture is smaller as well.
why does No one do a video of the lens with out the extender and with the extender, so we can see the difference?
Holy shit these images are blurry
Please explain the difference between case one in case to I just got the Canon one DX mark one and I shoot runway fashion can you tell me the best set up to track the model for the sharpest shots and like I said it was the difference between Kate wanted to I don’t know what that is I’ve never been use the camera touch the cameras Since bought it
thanks. it is a nice video is 70-200 f2.8 + 1.4x combination better than canon 70-300 f4-5.6L is usm?
Your mom should Not let you out of the house
Just got a 2x for my daughter but for a starter I have no clue what she needs to use it her other lenses do not hook up to it any help would be great
The sun is not very good we can see it is very very low with big shadows !
We can’t even see your face.
Straight from the heart. No demo. Thank you
Thank you for the helpful review. I also like the video editing. Feels like a 70s flick.
LOL . man this guy. his face is fucked up. he should go to hollywood. ))) sorry man just. . . . . . . . . . .
how the hell you afford all that gear lol
this video is stupid
Your video content was awesome BUT please invest in a mike cover; the wind noise was awful!
$500 for a 1.4x extender?
I just bought a 70D (with kit lens, Pro-100 printer, LowePro bag, and other accessories) for $750 and it gives 1.6x with zero light or AF speed loss.
Im currently shootings sports for my college with my 1D III and my 70-200 F/4L. Do you think the 2x converter would work well with this setup?
Why do you apologize bout not having a cares, its a Canon product being reviewed.
You forget to say that the extenders don't work on ever lens
why take the IS off?
why dont you use IS?
Excellent work Seth!
Excellent video very informative, I was thinking of buying an extender but I will save my money. Thanks for your honesty.
Is it compatible with 80d?
Does the AF on the 300 mm Canon works on the 2X III?
Crop bodies only affect the field of view. *Not* the focal length. This just gets repeated and repeated and. everyone ends up believing it.
But fact is, the field of view is all that's affected. Croppers don't make your lenses longer. They just take a pair of scissors to the image that the FF lens is projecting into its light box. That can't lengthen the optics.
The X1.4 extender loses you one full stop of max aperture and the X2 loses you two full stops.
Canon publishes a list of its lenses that are compatible with these. NO APS-C lenses are compatible with these devices. Certainly no short macro lenses, not even the very common walkabout EF 24-105 F4 IS USM lens. All of the L tele primes and zooms that I've used are compatible. But the X2 model always produces a noticeably softer image - even the MkIII version. Some lenses are soft to begin with, Canon QC isn't as tight with these pro lenses as it should be. So if you have a soft copy of whatever lens you're using, all aspects of its performance are subject to magnification. Including its "softness". If you use any of the X2 devices and have to crop an image significantly then image quality is going to be a major downside. As illustrated above in the clip.
Not nearly so much with the X1.4. Naturally, the longer the lens you use with these, the more you gain in multiplied length. But like most low cost shortcuts you have to be prepared to sacrifice something.
That said, I have shots using an old EF300 F4L IS USM with a mk1 X1.4 extender that are close to the sharpness of images taken with no extender. But not all. Other factors govern sharpness - such as the lack of IS in some less expensive lenses - and the longer the lens the more it is subject to camera shake. Using an extender also multiplies hand tremors - it all adds up to degrade images.
These also slow down the speed of autofocus - might not matter for still subjects but for birds in flight that's a significant sacrifice.
And if you reduce your max aperture too far in this way you might find - especially with the X2 devices - that your autofocus just won't work.
Plenty of L tele lenses are F4. Put a X2 on that, it becomes a max aperture F8 lens - very dodgy AF performance there - plenty of bodies will fail to autofocus at all never mind doing it fast.
Important info: only the older, type series II Canon teleconverters were working with the older manual lenses. Even if you have either a chipped or a chipless M42 adapters, the newer series III teleconverters were not working with them and you will get a Error 01 code. The LiveView will working, you could make a video, but the photo shooting is impossible.
Good review
Canon have a live chat with experts if anyone has questions about their extenders 100-400 mkii is sharper and you can extend that to 800mm with 2x extender on the canon eosr and get auto focus
Sharpness and quality improves using the Canon 5Dmk iii and iv.
Very helpful. Thank you.
thanks for this test1.4 is my prefered onemy lens is Tamron SP 70-300 VC DI USD EF would the extender give the same results on my Tamron?thanks
As we get new cameras with smaller pixels the extenders hav become less useful. Cropping often yields a picture as good or better, especially in sports where the drop in max apature is not worth the loss.
Very interesting. My conclusion would be: use the APSC with the Canon 1.4 extender.
your explanation helps, thankyou
Your sound level is far TOO LOUD!
I would have liked to see side by side at 100%.
I want buy a extender, thank for comparison and explanation, your video is pretty good.
I do lots of nature photography and currently I'm using the 1.4 on a Canon 800 mm prime good results since I like lot of detail in my pix. With that said let me express that using an extender is not necessarily plug & play depending on your lens and camera settings (Full disclosure I'm shooting a Canon 1DX MII). I've had the 1.4 extender for a few years and wasn't happy with it so I would only use it in very bright light to make up for the loss of F-stops and sometimes I wouldn't use it for long period of times because I didn't want to lose my detail. To make a long story short recently I've been getting great shots with good to very good detail. What happened? I change the way I shoot. I was used to shooting with a "go-to" set of parameters for Tv, Av and ISO.
i.e. I normally used to keep Tv and ISO at 1200 or higher because I do a lot of wildlife action shots. My lens is prime at 5.6 f so that was constant. I experimented with Stabilization on and a tripod. To my surprise even with cloudy skies I could shoot with Tv @ 100 and ISO@800 (or higher). I had virtually no noise and lots of detail. I haven't done this with the 2x yet but am thinking about it. BTW on shorter focal length lenses like a 200 mm and 400 mm the extender is more forgiving.
Absolute shite … the final comparison has at least 4 stops of light difference on the hat also you are rubbish the converters are better.
this the french academy lol wee-wee
What everyone should know is the loss of auto focus capability when combining the 100-400mm EF L IS ii and the EF 1.4x III. Useless!
Hi! Great pics! I've heard so many people say that the 100-400mm doesn't work well with extenders, but obviously it's ok. Basically autofocus is just slower, right?
Woop woop. woop wooop. wooop woop. so on, and so forth.
I just tried on my Canon 5D mark IV, looked like all the AF focus works on that.
The new 100-400mm L MkII autofocuses very well with the 7d MkII and a Kenko Series 300 1.4x so I imagine it will work even better with the newer Canon 1.4 MkIII
i've been thinking to buy 1.4x extender,i have this lense and 7d
I have the older version, ef 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6l with the canon 2x extender iii. Using both the eos 70D and the eos5D III. Autofocus when using the camera nomaly does not function but they both autofocus in Live view which is better than nothing:o) It might work the same with other camera models.
Seimant: How can solve the problem of the AF ? 100-400 have a lens with 2.4x ii Extender , but does not the AF
Will it work for my 6D or will I have the same issues with this lens as the 7D?
I have a 6D and im interested in this lens. Im a rookie so im asking before I buy. TY
So with the Mark III the AF worked fine? I'll get the 1.4x or the 2x extension for my Mark III to use with my Canon 100-400mm EF L IS and wanted to know what would be better. Cheers!
Yes and no, AF works on my Canon 5D Mark III. On my Canon 7D I had to use tape to cover 3 pins on the extender to get it to work. It was so slow that I could not use it.
AF IS POSSIBLE?
