Love your videos, the edition, the music. Keep that way.
Jared I have watched many reviewers, but as a Professional Photographer for over thirty years you are the best I have seen John Deehan London
I have a question. Im sure anyone who has purchased a Canon EOS 5DSr. Inside the Viewfinder I have noticed the metering is not very bright. The meter itself that is green inside the view finder. Especially in Bright sunlight. Is there anyway this can be corrected in the menu to make it more brighter so it can be seen? Thank you ahead of time.
Just how do you cancel the LPD in the Canon 5DS R? Is this automatic or can I find it in the Menu?
Those GX470’s are some awesome SUV’s for a soccer Mom type car.
Jesus Christ man, we (buyers) of that camera, are not buying it to be able to crop for the love of God.
We are buying it primarily for the high-quality reproduction in large format, where good resolution and great lenses are all we need. Consider it more like a Hasselblad for poor people.
You mentioned this camera is UHS 1 compatible, but I assume that means it’s still able to utilize UHS 2 & 3 cards now correct? I know this camera is considered ancient now but I’m looking for a B camera mostly for events and high fashion studio stills to compliment my EOS R I use for studio and video and I’m very interested in this MP count for the price now!
Can't wait for the EOS Rs to come out.
I think the 30mp in the 5d4 should be enough, due to the sensor size, especially. I bet it’ll be cleaner at higher iso also :)
Ansel Adams feels. Thanks Jared.
What is the best canon 5Dsr or nikon D850 please reply?
150 000 not run it out are you serious !! really
base price of $3500 now in eBay $1300
what is the price ?
Bought this in 2015. Not that many issues with Moire, can count that on one hand. I often use it at night at well, mostly at night in fact. Got great results, not pushing the iso too far. Not an issue at all. But time changes and I will switch camera this year. I see the R5 is coming, but I also believe Canon has something more up their Sleeve. R5 might be sufficient though, with all the great RF-lenses out there.
Hey Jared! If I could buy both cameras (5DS and 5DSR), would you recommend that? Thanks for so amazing content!.... Regards
How did you get permission to fly a drone at Grand canyon?
I am an aviation photographer who sometimes takes landscapes as well. I typically take photos of fast moving objects "planes" sometimes somewhat far away. Do you think this camera would be good for that? I currently have a T6 which was a great intro camera but I feel like its time to upgrade. The 50MPs is what got me with this camera. Whenever I edited photos that I took with my T6, there was plenty of visual noise in the photo; that is something I am definitely wanting to get rid of. I heard the 5DS R has a good quick AF too so thats another reason why I am considering it. I appreciate any help in advance!
Just brought this camera and I’m so pleased on your review and made me extra excited about it
My favorite camera ❤
Can you talk without the music so we can understand what you are saying?
Is it mirroeless
I just got this camera and I cannot for the life of me get a damned sharp photo!! Any suggestions are so welcome!!!! It is bizarre! I am reading other people’s experience and it is said with the higher megapixels any camera shake can have an affect so you have to run with a faster shutter speed. But I am still having a difficult time!
C'mon dude... One minute intro in a 7 minutes video just to make a freaking coffee???
I was coming back to this video several times. The first I was surprised and even a bit annoyed at how long that coffee intro was, I wanted the content as soon as possible (I enjoyed the musing theme, though). But watching this later, I was and still am laughing so bad every time in a good way. Thank you for the mood and for good work, Johnny :)
A must to take care of this cameras is NEVER store it in the bag resting on the LED display. Its contact area is huge, and being a thin layer of plastic, is fragile.
I am in. market for new camera when to the canon RP but got I home wasn't to happy about where the sd card slot was ..and really don't like the fact if a put on 3 party battery grip I have to remove it to get sd card out,,,saw this on camera store site and looked at it,,I rarely video and most my shots are family, freinds, And candidate shots. Any one else have this camera and like it?
Great vid, great coffee!
Does anyone knows how to get the shutter count of this model?
I don’t care much for your coffee breaks. You’re trying to look slick but you’re not. Just give me the information I need and take your coffee breaks afterwards when I’ve moved on. Mmmkay?!
I was dead set on keeping my fuji system even though it's drawbacks. And then I saw this video at the 3 minutes mark. Damn!!
Mine shipped from NY to CA this morning. Long time Medium format, then 60D shooter. My employer always provided the FF DSLR (5D Mk II). Will be nice to move out off Crop Sensor and 20MP.
Thanks, Johnny. Useful information and nice example photos & video.
Currently on sale at B&H for $1,499...new.
I found that the dynamic range of the 5ds r is surprisingly good. A solid camera.
2020 has been shit and business took a hit. :)
But it is a dam solid camera that will get a lot of work done for years and years to come. No need to buy the latest and greatest at all.
we are living in some dark times!!!!!!
LMAO - hilarious - anyways just ordered a NEW 5DS on Amazon for $1146 ...thanks for helping me make the call Also - check out the Technivorm Moccamaster 59712 K Coffee Brewer for an awesome coffee experience....
That's right!! I think when you are serious about photography, our decisions come from that we need to do with the camera, and our passion, not from the market trends. I just bougth the 5Ds for macrophotography because I need big prints too, and this is the best option for me. Many other may think I crazy, but is ok for me.
Thanks for the review.

Been a professional portrait photographer for over 18 years. Published in many magazines, websites, books and newspapers. Funny thing that I actually don't want all those details. Ultra ultra sharp camera's are not my cup of tea. If you see every red dot on the skin, every wrinkle in a face or on lips, every single hair out of place, it makes for much more effort going into post production. I have more high end camera's but most of my best shots are still being made with my 5dmark 2. Especially women are much more flattering with a softer focus. As long as the eyes are sharp i'm good. Besides, unless your photo's are being used for huge billboards, even the 5d Mark 1 and 2 are still plenty sharp.
With that said, I can appreciate a good razor sharp picture, just not for portraits unless you want to accentuate wrinkles and such. So to 99%, of the buyers i would even advise the Mark 3 over the Mark 4. Keep the extra money and buy a good lens. Yes the mark 4 is better, but do you need it? If it comes down to making beautiful portraits The Mark 2 or 3 + a solid f1.4, 1.8 prime or even the brilliant L 70 200 2.8IS, will serve pretty much all your needs and more.
Even in 2021.
The nr1 trick to making great photo's and being published is not about owning the newest most expensive camera. Far from it. If done correctly your employers won't even notice the difference between a cheapo camera and the most expensive one.
It's aIl about making beautiful pictures.
I'm not saying you shouldn't buy a good camera because you should! But just remember the beauty of a picture is not in the equipment but in the photographer.
Just my 2 cents.
Thanks for sharing. Great video.
hi friend im from korean i need u suggestions
cannon eos r or canon 5d mark iv.for fotograpy.
I had two 5DSR's and a 5D4 plus eleven of Canon's best lenses. The DSR can make some pretty high res files, especially when using a Zeiss Otus. Just hold it steady when you have good light. The 4 is more versatile with better dynamic range. I travel a lot in an RV and keep multiple cameras attached to lenses at the ready. If I were forced to only have one of the two cameras, I would take the 4. Now having said all of that, I sold all the Canon gear in 2018 for one Leica SL and a 24-90 plus a 90-280. That was a good decision as my hit rate improved as did image quality. I was also able to downsize from 3 rolling cases to 2 rolling cases. What's in the second case, you ask? My Leica S medium format camera. I've been shooting for 50 years. If I could go back to around 1980, I think I would rather have had one Leica and one lens than a couple of Nikons and multiple lenses, although my Nikonos V was a great camera.
Interesting watching this in Nov 2020. I would say today, given the closeness of the two cameras, but the exceptional deals for a used 5Ds/R. The decision just became easier.
Thank you, I already purchased Mark 4 over the 5dsr, so this was just to put my mind at ease.
Time flies fast - did you see B&H has the 5DSR on sale for $1,500 - talk about middle fingers to the customer! I'd hate to have paid full retail! Not that this is an issue with any recent cameras but the touch screen of the 5D4 is useful for navigating menus quick. I found setting up the 5DSR I kept reaching for the screen.
He really nailed it. I’ve been using 5DsR for a few years now, and I made that choice because I do so much aerial photography, where that high resolution really has a purpose, but the down side is definitely the noise performance of the sensor in lower light situations. This has been seen in some other very high pixel-density sensors as well, including the pricey Phase One. I am at the point where I would not actually recommend the 5DSR unless you have a specialty application like aerial or scientific photography where you really need it, or you are always shooting in perfectly controlled conditions, where you can avoid the noise. I hesitate to use it at anything above 800 ISO.
Thanks for your help guys. I was thinking of the 5Dsr but now it will either be the 5D mk4 or 1DX mk 2
Thanks the video was very helpful.
Thank you Sonder! You helped me make my decision!
Looks like 5d4 js is a better all performance compared to 5ds, but, coming from 5d2, I wanted to get 5d4, then found out that 5ds price now is practically half of the 5d4. For all around performance, weddings, indoor party, portrait, can 5ds performs better than 5d2, or should I save more for 5d4?
Great review. How are the out of camera colours of the 5DS, saturation and contrast compared to the mrk4 and mrk3? I was wondering if they are flatter because of the higher MP sensor ? Thanks 😊
What do you think about difference between 5dmkIV - EOS R
Hey what was the song you used in the middle of the video at 7:00?
Canon 5r or 5fs r for architecture photography?
You notice when someone is just interested in the subject and wants to share the knowledge. Good job!
Great review!! appreciate your perspective!!!
Neather -- buy the A7 S3
Great film and I need to get to Leeds soon. So here is how I use Canon. Since 2006 I have used Canon 1DsMKIII and 7DMKII as its side kick with film all over UK and EU for commercial clients, I have sold and printed prints up to 30ft x 20ft and nobody ever complained. I have moved onto 5DIII amazing camera, 5DIV just great for everything and the EOS R for film and 10 bit recording for TV with my C300MKII both 4k 10bit. I sold the 5Div after a year and bought the 5DsR for DPS magazine shoots and it does the business, in fact I bought the 5Ds and had it for 2 magazine shoots and replaced it for the 5DsR. If you want a camera that can do everything almost perfect then the 5Div is the one, If you want dynamic range then EOSR delivers in spades, I use it on a Ronin gimble for magazine TV channels with the C300 MKII as unit one camera. What you say here is so right, with the 5ds R if you nail focus you nail perfection, if you slightly off the mark then you are never going to fix it. The EOS R is more a camera to use for either film or stills but switching between the two a full pro standard can leave you with ‘I wish I had used something else’ like 5DIV or 5DsR. So, I will leave you with this, the 5DsR Is a full pro photographers’ camera and when its goo its fantastic.
I was using a Canon 80d which is a good camera, with a nice dynamic range, touchscreen etc. I wanted to update to full-frame...I liked the canon 5d mark iv but the body was 2000 dollars.
So...I saw the canon 5ds in 1249 and I just bought it together with a 24-70 lens. I can not be happier. The quality of the photos compared with the 80 d is just ANOTHER world.
Even in 6400 iso is A LOT better than the canon 80d. And I can say, i am super in love with the 50 mg because the capability of cropping is a HUGE HUGE advantage
I took photos for stock and book covers and I can take any part of the scene and still have a super high-quality photo. For me, that flexibility is incredibly useful. And I also use bracketing for extreme contrast situations so it is no problem with some lack of dynamic range. Of course, you can have better cameras, but you have to pay really a lot more.
If you want to upgrade from crop sensor, this camera is incredible, the quality and color rendition is really amazing. I don't have any more touchscreen nor wifi and not articulated screen like on my canon 80D... who cares? at the end, which is a matter...is the quality of the photo. I don't miss those features AT ALL.
With the 700 dollars, I saved for not buying the canon 5d mark iv I bought a good glass. I just want to share m experience after two months of using my Canon 5DS.
And many thanks to you Mr Easton, you open my mind to make the best choice. I wish you all the best.
Excellent review. Analytical and with real experience. I'm looking at buying one and getting back into photography
In my local cheapest store 5Ds is little shy of 2000 EUR (coz you know, we do pay taxes). I so wanna get one.
$3900 for EOS R5.. I'll go cry in a shower.. in EU the price is equivalent to $5500. You can get 3 decent pre-owned cars for that money.
830 $ for used canon EOS 5Ds r is it worth it ?
I'll gladly take that 5DS off your hands for free and give it a good home ;) I'm still using the original 5D from 2005. But yeah for professional purposes, it's more economical to upgrade to something newer to keep up with the times, especially when a well paying shoot or two should more than cover the cost of a new camera. Not to mention the new RF lenses are pretty good, performing better than even the L lenses on EF. With all that has come out, if you're a Canon user, you're looking at Canon, and only just recently has Canon really started to compete and bring viable replacements. And at this point if you're going to change lens systems, might as well go with Canon again rather than Sony or Nikon, because at this point, they're all pretty much at parity. Which means the only determining factor left is familiarity with Canon's design style and menu systems and such.
Bought the gray market 5DSR 1 year ago for $1800 USD and it is brand new with no issues. Did a full shutter count and pixel test and there were no bad pixels and shutter count was about 25 which is normal for Canon testing. Had to set movie from PAL to NTSC but that was it. Excellent camera and almost everything I shoot is landscape so buffer speed is a non issue. In addition Amazon has 2 year warranty you can buy that is easily as good or better than Canon's warranty. I shoot in live view so in essence it is mirrorless when shooting.
I am sorry but if you think a 50-megapixel sensor is not enough then something is wrong.
I understand you may want a faster shutter rate but billboards have been produced using an I phone and go back decades to the Nikon 12mp D700 that camera was used by most professionals.
Thank you for this excellent review and insight. I'm considering the body now that it's even less than $1,000USD (December 2020) as a third (specialized) body for portrait and landscape work. Also helped me choose b/t the s and sR.
I think youve been a little harsh on the Canon 5DS/r. Remember this is five year old technology and your comparing it to much newer cameras. Is it perfect, no but Ive also shot portraits with this camera for five years and still do and its served me well. Its not a sports camera, or wildlife but in the studio it sings and allows insane cropping with loss of resolution.
Sure today there are better options but in 2015/6 it was much harder and this camera married to lenses like the EF 85mm f1.4L IS USM or the EF 100 f2.8L IS USM or indeed the EF 70-200 f2.8L IS USM III gives outstanding results.
Would I buy one in 2020? No technology has changed it would be the R5 (which is way better than Canon first mirrorless full frame camera the EOS R).
The 5DS will always hold a place in my heart it deserves a better rap than the one you gave it.
I bought one two years ago and to me it's the end of thinking a about cameras. The 5dsr has it's flaws, but ANY camera has and this one has a gorgeous image quality (I'm calling it my razorblade) and it feels so great in your hand-the built quality is incredible! Thanks for your honest review!
How’s the colour output on the 5DS? Vs for example the colour rich 6D? I’m tempted ☺️
What lenses did you use here?
A really interesting vlog. If I were a proffesional photographer I would most certainly have upgraded the "tools of my trade" over the years because that's how I would be earning my living but as a keen hoybist photographer, it's a very different story. My two main cameras are still DSLRs, a Canon 5Ds and when I need speed, a 7D MkII but of course along with these goes the patiently built up collection of L series lenses. As a lightweight "carry option" I have a mirrorless system built around Canon's M series and from that, know the many advantages of mirrorless especially if you want to do video work however, would a brand new camera make me a better photographer ?
I suspect not though buying into the R series or Sony/Nikon/Panasonic would certainly make me poorer so for now I will stick with my 'old DSLRs' and just think about all those hand me down EF lenses that just might come my way at affordable prices :)
I just upgraded from a 7D to a used 6D MkII in September that I paid $1100 for. Two months later, Canon drops the price of the 5Ds to $1200. I'm going to go hang myself now. 😅
Just B&H forgot to adjust the listed price.
Outstanding video. Love the tone and the honesty!
Basing so much rant and verbal vobble on a price of one retailer... What the fuck? Maybe they last reviewed it's price in 2016 and forgot about it since. They are available in europe new for about 1,6k euros, must be available even cheaper in US. 5Ds are 1199 eur.
i wouldn’t buy it new. Only used and for less than 1200 euros
Great video, so recently the 5Ds price has dropped but...the EF 100mm f/2.8L IS priced at $1299 here in the U.S.
Another badly flawed dumbass negative review. You whine about the price ignoring that you look to BH for an example! Doh... Even then it would be as cheap as several 24mpx models from elsewhere. Not to mention that they are commonly available, warranties, at less than half that, in the UK fir £1350. Reprehensible? In 2020. Yes, your reporting is. Garbage. I didn’t even mention the boring delivery. Oh, it slipped out.
