Image stabilzation is so good I shoot at 1/60 th second at 400mm and the images are sharp. As a matter of a fact even when paired with the 1.4 x tele extender miii the images are tack sharp. This is my favorite travel lens when combined with tele extenders most all subjects are obtainable skittish small songbirds sometimes are difficult but are'nt they always. And with the 1dxmii and miii or the 5d miv full frame bodies all auto focus points work with the miii version of tele converters. And with 7d mii crop bodies songbirds fall into view.

The lens is very very sharp at all focal lengths✬✬>imgs.love/SonyF-E?Ӏӏ which is why I said "Why Buy the 70-200 GM When You Can Have the 100-400GM?" If you need a telephoto zoom for portraits in low light, this is not your lens. But I feel very comfortable saying this lens would make an excellent portrait lens in studio and outdoors in good lighting. Don't forget 400mm at 5.6 isolates the subject and blows out the background just as well as 135mm or 200mm at f/2.8. No need to worry so much a HSS to get that effect, either.

This plus the 2.0x teleconverter is going to be the next lens I buy, after I upgrade to a 90D. I want a good all-arounder that's a step up from my T6i. Right now my go-to tele is a 150 dollar Sigma 70-300 that isn't made anymore. I took it on vacation and while I used several different lenses for landscapes and stuff, looking back and editing the pictures I just realized how much that 70-300 really owned that trip as far as the number of good images. I couldn't even imagine the kind of shots I'd get if I had taken this lens, perhaps with a 2.0x Teleconverter on that trip. There were some big animals I wished to keep quite my distance from, and being able to zoom to 1200mm (crop sensor camera, 2.0x teleconverter) would be simply astonishing. I also think this lens and a 90D would absolutely KILL it for motorsports events which I also enjoy.

Nice talk. Really curious if this is a good alternative to Canon broadcast lenses for aeroplane videos. I have a very old SD Canon broadcast b4 lens it's like 28-540mm in 35mm photo format. But those lenses are to 3 times the price of this photo lens, which is a much sharper attractive alternative.
BUT...will this be more legendary than the Canon EF 80-200mm f/2.8l "Magic Drainpipe"? Just joking anyways...I'm planning to rent this lens from a local camera store to see how I like it.

I have the Sigma 150-600 contemporary lens already, to get this lens I’d really be pulling out all the stops (I’ve only bought 4 cars that have been more expensive than this!) do you think I’d be better off investing more time in using my Sigma and forgetting this (for the moment)? I was shooting at a motorsport circuit and to be honest whilst the Sigma was great for shots down the pit lane and of the driver in the garage during an in-car briefing it was too much for on track action at 600mm and over the top size, weight & aperture for 200-400mm shooting.
Do you recommend the new 100-500 RF lens over this? Or save 400 by going with this lens?

Chris, you'd be very surprised if you add extension tubes to this lens and shoot at 100mm....... It produces more than 1:1 magnification when longer extension tubes are used.
