Canon 15-85mm IS USM Lens - Why ISN'T This Lens Recommended?
Canon EF-S 15-85mm lens review
UNBOXING REVIEW | CANON EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens
It is super sharp. My favorite walk around lens for the last 10 years. Pretty expensive, but is worth it
Thank you for every useful video. Kindly do you recommend this lens to be used (+ Metabones T Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x) with a BMPCC4K?
for the last hour ive been researching a good superzoom lens to upgrade to from my kit for travel video footage and I think I just found the one. I cam across your channel just now whilst looking into all this and I cant tell you how helpful they are! incredible! consider me subbed and more than willing to hear any and all recommendations you have for other upgrades. Thanks
how good is this usm vs the newest stm 18-55/135?
This one vs the new 18-135mm? for video work?
I have both Canon and Nikon DSLRs, I found Nikon's 16-85mm lens superior in image quality, but Canon's IS better.
Thank you Chris, Will this be a good option for EOS M6 Markii to upgrade from it's kit lens i.e. 15-45mm considering the high resolution sensor.
what's sharper, this lens or Sony E18-135?
Excellent review, Christopher. I use this lens on the Blackmagic 6k pocket camera (with aps-c senosor) and I find it to be every thing you say it is and more. It and the 50-200mm are the two I take with me. The in-lens stabilization is excellent-better than the vast number of cameras with sensor stabilization. Alas, Canon is right-in-lens stabilization is not fraught with so many of the problems you find with sensor stabilized images. Thanks for such a great review.
Cannot decide between this and sigma 15-50! Sigma is faster but smaller length. I primarily want it for landscape photography but fast for portraits is nice too. Also the IS seems better on Canon. I use T7i. What do you guys think
Hi. Please can you tell me what is best portrait canon lens and affordable. Note please my camera its canon eos 7d Thanks for any help
Best channel
I am seeing this lens very well priced used now in excellent condition now. In terms of used if I was looking at the 18-135 Nano or this one which would be best deal for overall on a Canon 7D. I don't plan to upgrade my body just want a good quality clear lens and this one looks great in this review
Really great, and honest review. Thanks.
So then here is my question. I am a retired Hasselblad wedding photographer. I now own a Canon 90d. Is this lens a good match. I mostly am doing vacation, sports non game portraits, and family. I get out holiday images printed to 5x7 and put them in an album. Is this older lens still a good match for the 90d. I am not interested in 24-70 2.8 to heavy for me now. I value your opinions and reviews. Thank you for giving us an idea of the selections that are out there. The Hassy was easier, great camera, 60 and 80mm a few film backs, a Quantum flash and you are ready to go. Thanks again for what you do for us. Getting married this year?
How well will this perform on a Canon EOS 50m mirrorless camara?
Hello Sir. Can You Update the review of this lens on your more Standard Test this days. This is Great option for Fuji now that Fringer has an adapter for Canon. Cheers!
Looks like Christopher does not take tme to respond to anyone, so I guess hold your comments or get answers elswhere.
Do you still recommended? 6 years later?
Can i use this lens on a t6
I think it replaced the 17-85 at a time when everybody was looking for 2.8 and 1.8 lenses. I think the 17-55 2.8 is cheaper and its amazing. I personally use the sigma 17-50 and at the price it's amazing.
Years ago I owned the canon 40d with the 15-85 but sold them both for the canon 70d and since bought the 10-18 IS STM and 18-135 IS STM. The 10-18 on a crop body is 16mm to 28.8mm whereas the 15 is 24mm so I am Much wider with no noise with the 10-18 and swap them out for the 18-135 and if I need longer I throw on my 55-250 IS STM and I too own the Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS & 70-200 2.8 OS. So yeah I agree that now a day's the canon 15-85 is Too outdated, was a Great lens ten years ago but not worth buying now.
If someone offered you the lens in excellent condition for $200 bucks, would you buy it?
why I think your video is black and white haha you reallllly love everything in BLACK color .
Can you use this EF-S on an EF Camera for example 6D Mark 2 by adapter or some modification? Thanks,
I've owned 2 Canon 90D having sent the first back thinking It was faulty,Wrong the second was no differentIt's a crap camera periodThe 80D Is far superior IQ wise.90D has too many Mpix for an APSC sensor,Noise Is very evident anything over 400 ISO.I have had the 15-85 for years and find the IQ Is way beyond the 18-135 IS USMI went mirrorless with Fuji and SonyI even went Nikon I missed that certain something the 80D gave me.Noise control,Colour,Useability.I just had to come backLow lightI have primes for that1.4,1.8.28.Canon 15-85mm EF-S should go down along with the Canon 40D as one of their success stories
I have a 15-85. Purchased new along with my 7D soon after it was introduced. After more than 11 years and close to 200,000 shutter count, both camera and lens still working great. And although the 15-85 is not rated as weatherproof, I have used it many times in pretty rough wet weather for extended periods, and I never encountered any issues with it, and there is no dust nor fungus inside the glass elements. It just keeps chugging along. So from my personal experience, it was well worth the price that I paid. That being said, I also have a 5D II with a 24-105L lens. Comparing the 2 lenses side by side, I don't feel that the L lens is any better built than the 15-85. In fact I prefer the 15-85 in the way it handles, the zoom ring at the front compared to being at the rear for the L.
It is a bit pricey but I grabbed one use and I'm happy I did. I have the 18-135 Nano USM and it's night and day difference. The 15-85 is one stop faster in reality because I'm not happy with the 18-135 unless it is stopped down to f/8 but the 15-85 performs nicely wide open. For video get the 18-135 and for stills the 15-85 is much better.
Bought this used under half the price of a new one and are very happy with it. :D
Sigma 17-70MM
I also have the 15-85 which I bought 2nd hand. I love it. Fast quiet focus. Quite a heavy lens compared to a kit lens. Really havent noticed a problem with the F3.5 to 5.6 aperture. If photographing indoors it tends to be around the 24mm mark which is F4 anyway. (15mm=3.5, 24mm=4.0, 35mm=4.5). The image stabilization is great, so that also helps.
I agree with many below comments, the 15-85mm is an awsome, smooth, quiet and sharp lens. Second hand, this is the one lens you should take on a trip.
Buy a used one. Almost all APS-C lenses values sink like a lead balloon.
It's funny. Everybody's talking about the 15-85 having great image quality. But I've never seen an image from that lens that looked really sharp. In fact mostly the corners look abominable! It makes me wonder, does everybody just assume that at that price it has to be great? Or has anybody actually taken nice and sharp pictures with it? I've never tried the lens myself, and most likely I'm never going to. Partly because of the severe mismatch between price and maximum aperture. (Not to mention the absence of a lens hood). But first of all I'd want to see some really impressive images taken with the lens before I'd consider buying it.
Ok it’s expensive but depends what type of photography you do. I mainly use it for travels where I need various ranges at anytime and this lens has a fantastic range without needing to swap lenses all the time. There is a significant difference between 15 and 18 ( I also own the 18-135 but rarely use for that difference) especially when photographing indoors. There is a bit of distortion at 15 but when really an issue can be corrected in post processing. This lens is close to the full frame 24-105 which covers most needs during travel. I always carry another lens 10-22 or 70-300 but the hassle of switching lenses all the time makes me love the 15-85. It is sharp. So really depends what you usage is going to be. Yes 5.6 didn’t make it an ideal lens for portraits but in those circumstances you can swap with a portrait lens. It is a bit heavy with a Canon 80D and may be the reason for me switching in the future ( my neck after a whole day of travelling with it starts requesting for change)?” but cannot find many alternatives at Fuji/Olympus/Panasonic that have the same quality or just simply the same range.
This iscwhy Christopher Frost Photography is the only review channel that I watch
canon 15-85mm used for $250-300 canon 70-300mm L used for $600 I dunno why you would even think about buying any of these new. Used are a fraction of the price and just as good.
The Canon 15-85 and the Sigma 17-50 are the same price used at the moment, what would you go for ?
2012 this lens only $300-$400. why this more expensive today?
Rest in Peace Matt! Thanks for your contribution!
Wow, Gordon. You really got better at talking to the camera. lol
Do you recommend this type of lens for the ESO Canon M50?
ty!
Hi would you still recommend this lens for an all around user/learner or is there something newer on the market that does the same? any recommendations or feedback is appriciated
is it compatible for EOS 80D?
What do you recommend for 650 d ? For general purposes? Thank you so much.
I always search for your videos when deciding on a new lens. Awesome reviews!
Will the 17-40mm beat this in terms of sharpness? I don't care about zoom range, I just want a good lens for landscape, and timelapse photography.
So it only works with crop sensors
I'm the 1k liker
I realise this is quite an old video but I thought I'd just point out that the 18-135mm (which is compared to the 15-85mm in terms of focus noise) now has an STM motor so it is virtually silent when focusing.
Canon EF-S 15-85mm lens for 5diii ?
will it fit well with the 70D?
Your Bloody Awesome MAte! Thank you!
A wonderful review, as it sold me on the lens for my new 70D.
Excellent review Gordon, thanks
So I purchased a Canon 28mm 1.8 USM for my 60D Canon and have used it for street, night and landscape photography and I love that little lense. Now i'm considering buying a second lense. Again mostly for cityscape and street photography, am I right at thinking that this would be a good choice? By having also the 1.8f lense with me any limitations of this lense can be covered I think.
It is a nice general lens but for sports photography I'd recommend a lens with a bigger focal length (e.g. EFS 18-135) . And for sports lower f is good, but that's usually in a higher price range (e.g. EF 70-200 / f 2.8)
Do you guys recommend this for general and sports photography? Im a comunication student but i have been invited to sports events and i would like to know what's better and not super expensive
To replace my 18-55 with a better and more versatile one (especially below 18) I bought the 15-85 because of this very helpful review. Got the lens today and there was a lens hood included. Perhaps canon fixed that because of your review. Thumbs up! ;) The zoom falling back when pointed upwards isn't the case with my lens. Maybe it starts to do this when the mechanic is worn down. The build quality and visual quality is very satisfying on the first look. It's a pretty good everyday lens.
how does this lans work on a dual pixel sensor body (like 70 or 80d) regarding video autofocus speed and sound ? vs the stm?
I have the 17-85 on my 70D, how much of a difference is there between the 2 lens other than the 2mm
Thanks. Good info on this lens.
