I’d love to take focus stacked images of insects in amber but some are 1mm, just how much magnification could I get if pushed to the limits with extension tubes and digital zoom ?

0:50 - Obviously this video was made well before the release of the Canon EOS R, but this lens will work on the full-frame EOS R with one of the three adapters you can purchase to connect EF lenses to the EOS.

Hi Great review! I wanted to ask for your opinion I don’t have a high budget and I need a macro lens for close ups on Lego figures as I do stop motion. I currently have a canon 70d with a 18-135mm lens but when I try to get a close up shot of the Lego figures face, it’s too out of focus. Out of the 60mm and 100m macro lenses, which do you think would be best for me? As I would just like high quality focused close up shots of the figures Thank you 👍
I use this lens for photographing snakes and other small reptiles, and i have to say its more of a pain in the ass than its worth. As demonstrated in this video, F2.8 doesnt even allow you to focus the camera properly on a bit of text without part of the characters going out of focus. Way too narrow depth of field. It can do incredible work, but it will leave you largely disappointed overall. It seems even telling the camera to shoot in something like F9+ it still produces a very narrow range of things in focus
I rather like the bokeh, to be honest. It’s somewhat swirly, like the old Helios manual lenses. Not as swirly, but the bokeh is creamy and the images much, much sharper.

Hi Nick. Have you ever (or any of you reading this comment) tried this 60mm with extension tube shooting videos ? Is the autofocus still working ? What do you think are the pros and cons of using the 60mm on photography and videography ? Anyone ?
Sharpest lens I have (excluding my new 70-200mm f/2.8 IS) and doubly so with my new Canon M50 IS camera...
It would have been great if you included the minimum distance from the eye on the $ to end of the lens. A larger distance let’s more light in and if you are photographing a bug there will be less chance of scaring the bug away. Four things if find important are - minimum focus distance - maximum distance - minimum height of the subject to fill the the frame - and maximum height to fill the frame. If you want to photograph a fly and can only fit the eyeball in the shot and have to be let’s say 1” away to get focus you will be in trouble.
So you're really comparing 3 lenses 24to105(w/ extention)....60mm maro( with and without extention) and the the 100 f2.8 L lense ( with L glass and better consruction).....also with great stabilization and fast auto focus...so kinda an apples to oranges kinda thing there ...don't you think...? But anyway good points....liked the 60 with the tubes....but want the versatility the the canon L lens offers for handheld macro and a really nice portrait lens.....around 600 used or 699 new as of now January 2020.

You can still use the Canon 60mm macro with FF bodies by using an extension tube...works perfectly on my 70D and also 6D mk2 although I am thinking of getting the 100mm for the benefit of IS. The 60mm is just so light compared to all the 90-105's and much easier to hold...I also have the Sigma 105 with IS and prefer the Canon 60mm.
Nick, I also have both lenses but I don't have extension tubes as yet. I also have both full frame and crop bodies (5d4 and 70D) so my comments are not theoretical but based on personal experience. Please check though = the 100mm lens showed a wider FOV with tubes than without - I'd have expected a smaller difference than with the 60mm but not one that reduces magnification Both are amazing lenses BUT the difference is the IS first. This allows me to take at 1/6s or jump the ISO from 3200 to 400 hand held. It also doubles as a FANTASTIC extremely fast focusing action and portrait lens - which I'd argue it does as well as the 135mm L or the 70-200 f/4 IS Second, the longer focus distance for the same magnification (without the tubes) means a safety distance from bugs that bite and less chance of insects being bugged by me. I must say though that the 60mm is fantastic - probably more so with tubes and makes a LOT of sense on a crop body. The question really becomes one of differences and if they are worth it to you and your budget. I bought the 60mm second hand for $150 and the 100mm L new. Both are bargains in my circumstances. cb

Wait what? 100mm with extension tube doesn't get you any closer? I think you messed this one up, mate. There is no difference with and without extension tube on in your pictures.. Also, 100mm would get you closer than a 60mm if you did not switch from a crop to a full format... Try this one more time maybe :-/ Idk - something is wrong.
Thanks for the video, I have the 60mm 2.8 and just got extension tubes. Great macros, but then I saw the 100mm macro and thought I needed that one. Now I am perfectly happy with my 60mm+extension tubes...Good video and cute t-shirt.
Unless you shoot cooking videos. Then you wanna go with the 100mm L for IS or the new 35mm macro IS STM :)
