chromatic abberation in sunny day is the main with this lens....everytime is an hard challenge get good photo without tripod...is amazing for portrait but really challenging in other situation.......every shot need to be prepared with good settings...what i mean is that most of the time if you are a street photografer you will be disappointed if you think to do a fast shot of particular moment.....in the end is a good lens 'till you use it on a tripod

Got this lens last summer and it is a real favourite of mine - it just loves people. You can pick them up so cheaply (I got mine for under 200) and the image quality is simply fantastic for the price. AF is fast and accurate. When it comes to value for money it really is one of the great bargains. Great review as always Christopher.

hey i have enough information now about photography and i really appreciate everything you have done for me. well i have notice f1.8 is better but i'm going to try out a few lenses tomorrow at my buddy house and see how good it does on my old camera the 10.1 megapixel one. i'm going to buy the canon 50mm from amazon and deal with that for awhile and then i will look at the tamron 35-150 i heard a lot of good things about that lens and then i heard good things about the tamron 17-35 and i'm also hearing good things about the sigma 18-35. he have a nice camera bag and he have 2 cameras and 4 lenses 1 full frame and 1 crop sensor that's cool. he was showing me the difference between full frame and crop and i love what i'm hearing with the full frame one. but i will definitely buy the canon 80d and the canon 6d and i'm done 3 cameras is all you need and i will see which one i will use the most lol. i already have an tamron 18-200 and i want the tamron 35-150 and the 50mm and the tamron 17-35 and the 10-18 that's 5 lens but i will see which ones i will decide to go with. so with those lenses i mention i want you to tell me what you think about those nices lenses

the 85 1.8 is a great lens! such a shame about the chromatic abberations it's so hard to use it at 1.8

i enjoyed the video and the information within. of the portraits shown, were you shooting in AV mode or? I use the Canon 90d and yes i have this lens. I am wondering if it is better to use this 85mm or a 50mm or a 35mm lens for outdoor shots/portraits?
Having a 24-105L will I achive the same results adjusting my focus to that distance or this 85mm will be better for portraits? I know that the 24-105 is f4 and the 85 is f1.8 but normally I shoot at f7/f8 with off camera flash. Thanks!!
It's a good lens, but I think to sum it up is it's a decent lens at f/1.8, a great lens at f/2.8, and a perfect lens at f/4. Infinite focus is a bit difficult, so while it can be used as a landscape lens, its infinite focus has such a wide focus throw that it's difficult to actually get true infinite focus, so you can think you're at infinite focus, but the sharpest part of the frame isn't the horizon, it's something a few hundred feet away then a noticeable fall off of sharpness on the horizon because it's not at true infinite focus. Even less then a millimeter off, and you're either over or under infinite focus. I'd say that the pricing needs to change though. $300 for a lens for a dead mount system, is just way too high. These aren't flying off the shelves anymore. But companies are still trying to get rid of old stock. Not to mention that with mirrorless camera's, lenses are generally sharper due to not having to engineer around the distance needed for a mirror box. So it's just easier to make sharper lenses on mirrorless. It's a good lens whose time has passed, sadly. If they ever release another EF mount camera, then it might get some revival. When all the 5MK3 and MK4's start dying of old age (which is already well on its way to happening), this lens will go the way of the dinosaur.
Was poking around 85mm videos and came across this. Great video and you are a natural on camera btw.
I've shot this great little lens on many occasions. And I always liked it for many reasons. Few times I had the opportunity to shoot on the 85mm f1,2. And yes it has better depth, better bokeh, and colour rendition. All do it's not (too) much sharper than the 85/1,8.But for everything else than portraiture, that lens is too big, too heavy, too slow autofocus wise and too expensive.By the way, I've had that Elan 7 back in the day (6:55), but as an idiot that I am, I sold it...Subbed, have a great day.

Extremely underrated lens. You dont need 1.4 or 1.2. It get amazing images been using it for 2 years. Tbh dont waste money of 1.2 or 1.4 . Use the money for other equipment
I watched a demo on YouTube showing both the Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R and the lower priced one Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. They were amazing when attached to the camera it doesn't even look like there's an lens adapter attach! Almost like it was manufactured with the camera! My Canon EOS SLR film cameras and there non-image stabilization EF lenses still have a future!

I think somehow our minds are quantum entangled :) Your video content always seems to be things that are of interest to me. I own quite a number of lenses, but never this 85 1.8, and has been on my radar recently, so thanks for another well made video and builds my confidence in choosing that lens hopefully not far down the road. If you've never used Canon 135mm f2.0, it's my favorite lens. Extremely sharp yet super silky images. It's not for every purpose but is amazing in many situations. Just like to pass it on as seems like not many photographers have used it. Great images too, I like your photographic style.
Yes! this is my poor-me favorite portrait lens! lol I use this lens for both my SL3 and Elan II! I always like lens review with good sample of photos. Well done!
