Fantastic lens I love mine.
It really is a superior lens and as of today (3rd Nov 2023) it can be bought on the auction platform for £450 in mint condition, go and get one you will be shocked how good it is
You should re-review this lens, i ended up keeping it when switching from 5D to R5 because it is a really good alternative to the RF 100-400 5.6-8 (which is crazy expensive for it's aperture), and the very heavy and even more insanely priced RF 100-500 L. I also think it is a good alternative to the RF70-200 f4 and although it can't compete with the RF 70-200 f2.8L, the extra range is nice to have and a 70-300+85 or a 135 or a 200 fixed focus gives you a potentially better combo than a 70-200 2.8 with the downside of having to change lens but, if you are in a dark environment you might change lens anyway. A great lens at a very affordable price nowadays.
Chris, hope you can retest this lens for EOS R7, that will be great for R7 users to find whether this lens is perfect for their travel telephoto options
Thanks in advance
Thanks for your useful and considered review, Christopher, which reflects the performance of my copy of this lens exactly.
I've recently purchased it secondhand. I based my purchase decision based on your review and several other very positive reviews, and use it mainly on a 6D.
I also use it on a 100D for occasional bird photo projects to get that effective 480mm reach.
It's so sharp at widest apertures and this offsets the fact that it is no faster than the standard Canon 70-300 lenses, which need stopping down for best results.
Although it is slightly weighty, the stubby design means that the weight is balanced near the camera body. The relative shortness and robustness of the lens also makes it eminently packable for travel.
The rendering is really natural, and it complements the fantastic sensor in the 6D really well. This is a great lens!
It’s this just the old DO re housed ?
How's it compare with the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM Lens?
This is far and away the best corner sharpness I’ve seen from a less than fully modern zoom lens. Shame it’s a bit slow but I might be keen to adapt this onto my Fuji
Does this come with a tripod collar?
God lent, buying the last month past year and yes! Gog true image.
I got mine secondhand from a friend for like $600 and I love it. Sharp as a tack
Would love a revisit of this lens on canon new mirrorless systems!
Someone else have a slightly lose Focus Ring on this Lens?
Please advise experienced. I have a Tamron 70-300 F4-5.6 VC USD. Is it worth buying this lens? When comparing parameters, there is 90% agreement :) So that I don't just buy an "L" feeling. Thank you for your experience and answer.
I really don't understand the point of a 70-300 4-5.6 in this day and age, especially as an L lens.
100-400 or 3rd party 150-600 cover the long end better, and 70-200 f2.8 much better serve the short end
Good analysis and review. This is an excellent lens, among Canon’s finest, with superb image quality, colours, sharpness, dynamic range and very useful IS. I am happy to use it, it gives excellent results.
110 CM is 1,1 Meters.
Christopher you are my go-to person for reviews. I have a Canon70D so I appreciate your APS-C comparisons
Worth every penny!
Hi there, I would like to complement you on your reviews I found them so helpful. I'm looking for advice on getting into photography, always have a small compact in my rucksack. There is so much advice out there I'm baffled and I'm unsure which way to go, I have looked at the Cannon 7d II which has great reviews even though its an old camera. Wildlife photography would be my main interest, therefore the Canon 70 - 300 looks impressive. I have a budget of around £1000 therefore I will have to purchase second hand equipment. If you have the time and could suggest a combination I would be so grateful. Nigel
All of the vids I’ve seen the zoom all looks different. For example some times the 500mm looks like it zooms very far and sometimes it doesn’t. Any reasons why?
I used this lense with a teleplus 1.4 DGX 300 pro extender to shoot an air show and got some wonderful pics.
I found this lens on Facebook for $180. I’m looking for a zoom lens for a trip to Yellowstone. I’m a beginner with a Rebel SL1. Do you think this lens would be suitable? Thank you!
Is it better then the canon 75-300mm f4/5.6 iii (non usm)
How would this work on a sony camera in terms of focus
How come every lens i search leads to you. You got every lens there is. Great work man.
i wouldnt say it was very sharp but good!
the tamron is pretty sharp but with both my 70d and RP it misses the focus lots of time and past 200mm the vc is just annoying
great video but why do you keep saying cammer instead of camera?
Its August of 2022, and I just watched this old review. I like the information and the presentation, but lets be clear about something in regards to using this lens on an APS-C vs FF camera. on an APS-C the effective focal length is 112-480 mm f/4-5.6. So given these specs, at equal focal lengths using equal quality sensors, in theory the image quality at say 300 mm (300 mm FF vs 187.5 mm APS-C) is equal or possibly even better on APS-C cameras. The 60D is also a turd in Canon's X0D history. The 70D, 80D, and now 90D are a drastic improvement over the 60D as it is likely the worst focusing camera body in the past 20 years. This lens is superb in bang for the buck, and works equally well as the 70-300 IS USM II. The newer 70-300 L IS USM is a professional quality lens, and a good improvement, but at nearly 5x the price of this lens. If you dont have one, and only need it for the occasional shot, buy it, you wont regret it.
Does anyone know if this will fit the eos 250d ? X
just a reminder that on an apsc sensor this gives you a 112-494mm such a cheap super zoom lens!
Is it better than tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6 vc lens or temron one is better
hey I have a lens that isnt so smooth when you are zooming so it makes it hard to make small adjustments. When you make slow and small adjustments with this lens does it feel smooth and easy to turn?
Hi Christopher , thanks for your video. Which one is better between the canon 70 300 IS version I or tamron 70 300 VC in full format?
But i have to say i really loved the 70-300 canon on my old 550D, amazing value since i got it 2nd hand (same for camera)
Paid for the camera and the lens something like 250$, 160$ for the lens in good shape long ago and „abused“ 550D for 90$ as my 350D was too outdated years ago
Ofc i would have loved since always a 70-200 F4 L or even the 2.8, but the price still speak against it and for the very rare situations i need a tele, the 70-300 is just fine
Hey, was there any contrast adjustment in post?
Christopher, you have a review for LITERALLY every lens i've searched up more info on. You are awesome!
Is this this lens a great pair with the cannon EOS 90D?

Higher cost is for optics quality and weather sealing. Weather sealing is important considering it’s outdoor lens. Also it produces artistic image quality.although non L can produce same sharpness image rendering is superior. I would buy used copy of this lens rather new non L for the same price
"I'm gonna start right now" followed by intro, waffle, 5 minutes later "without further a do."
I got one of these for about £450 used. An absolute steal considering the price of newer lenses! It's quite heavy but it's very well built so I think it's worth it!
I am thinking about this lens or the $200 75-300mm lens for my Canon rebel T3, I am just starting out and I found this lens on Facebook marketplace for $550 and I don’t know which one to get? Can you help?
Honest and down to earth comments about this lens. I have had this lens since 2020 during the beginning of the pandemic but really didn't get to test and use this lens until I was at the 2022 US Open of Tennis in Flushing, New York. I LOVE this lens because of the build and quality of it PLUS it's super sharp. I captured some great photos of the professional tennis players practicing and qualifying for the 2022 US Open. The lens is heavier than the other Canon 70-100mm telephoto zoom lens but this is a plus because it prevented my hand holding the lens from moving while using it acting as another image stabilizer. It's a bit pricey but I purchased mine used under $1000 from B&H photo. I love this lens picture quality so much, I'm going to purchase two more of these exact lenses so that I'll have one in each of my camera backpacks.
Are you saying that smaller or variable aperture equates to sub-standard optics? I don't think aperture specification should have been taken into consideration when judging the quality of the glass and the resulting image quality. Your 8/10 should have been 9/10. I used to own a 70-200mm f2.8 which I bought (for it's low light capabilities) knowing that the 70-200mm f4 was generally sharper than the f2.8 version. I think that an aperture of f4 or f5.6 is no justification for marking a lens down on image quality. That's like subtracting points on image quality because Canon didn't supply a tripod ring mount.
Hello kif great review! I just want to ask if this is better lens over the ef 70-200mm f4 IS usm?
I’ve seen lots of CA on this lens, have you ever seen it? Would be great to add CA into your reviews . Thanks for the review
Incredible!
Thinking of hiring this lens from Lenses for hire online as going to Brands Hatch next Sunday and only have Sigma macro lens and want to take some nicer photos is it worth hiring this lens for that.
I've owned one of these for many years years and it's an absolutely superb lens. It's handles great, it's well balanced and it's so much sharper than the non L version. I had one of the famous EF 70-200 f4 L lenses prior to this which was renowned for its sharpness; I sold it as this lens is just as sharp and has the extra reach. It's always in my camera bag and contrary to this review I'd have no hesitation recommending it. If I had one caveat it's the cheap plastic lens hood, but then Canon tend to do that with almost all of their lenses.
The non L version I think is for me. Can't justify that price tag. Will just have to bump up the sharpness and noise in LR
i just fuckin love this lens so so muchhhh
: I own one, I use it on my EOS RP. When using the cropping/aspect ratio this lens becomes a 112mm to 480mm lens inside the EOS RP with just the touch of the screen. Now you have a 70 to 480 mm lens on camera. If you use a 1.4x or a 2.0x extended telephoto you can have a 70mm to 960mm lens on camera. You basically only have to carry this one lens and a extender in your pocket. I prefer cargo pants. LOL.
Will you know if Canon is going to upgrade this lens?.
This lens is worth every penny Comparing the L to the non L lens is comparing chalk and cheese.
Optically far superior and pro build.
There is a reason why Canon L glass costs considerably more than a standard lens and its not the red ring.
Hello dear.! I bought it two weeks ago and I CAN'T make a good focus with it, the truth is, I am very disappointed with the sharpness and quality of the images, I have a 75 - 300 of the Canon economic line and FAR the sharpness is superior to this very inferior lens . I beg you can explain why this could be ? Every time I go out with it, I return to the POC to see images and I am very disappointed with a very poor quality.- NOTE: I bought it NEW, not used - REGARD Santiago/Chile
What do you think between canon 70 300mm f4 5.6 is 2 usm and canon 70 300mm f4 5.6L is usm. Even though the last one is about 10 years old.
On a R5/R6 you still can use this lens on 300mm without any reduction in resolution (like the other ones on the market) you even can use the Kenko Pro 1.4x Converter and focus with the combo (you can not do this on older reliably). The Tamron and Canon IS II model do not reach the quality on 300mm and can focus that fast on the R5/R6.
i got one of these Canon lenses and i had it for 6 years now and i use it for fashion / celebrities / wild life / sports / portraits/ and video recording and is a good lens and well made
Is this lens as sharp as Canon's 55 to 250 , if it is I will buy it. I will be using it on a 77 D. Thank you.
The dog photo looks amazing. This is a good value lens, considering price performance. The 75-300, although much cheaper, can't compare to how good this one is.
this lens is a dog .
Este era el video que necesitaba ver para estar seguro de la inversión
Is the Canon 55 to 250 lens sharper than this 70 to 300. I have the 55 to 250 and it is very sharp so I don't want to trade it in for an additional 50 mm unless this new 70-300 is a lot sharper thanks for all your great videos. I use the
77 D camera
I’ve got mine today Chris will use it on my canon mark 11
Great video
if possible, can you re-review this lens using the Canon R7?
Pick one up before they are no longer available?
Hi Chris. Can you tell me how this lens work on a Canon R7? Is almost has good, like in DSLR'S? Or has a fews limitations? Thank you.
Which one would be better? This 70-300mm nano or the 55-250mm STM? I have a canon SL3(250D), Im looking for a good general use telephoto lens(video, wildlife etc) and i cant make my mind between the two :(
I've enjoyed your videos a lot i'm from India and have subscribed to you today technical inputs are very grest.
What's the best lens for that range and bokeh?
Is this compatible for canon eos rebel t5
Between 70-300 L USM & 70-300 Nano USM , which one is better ?
This is really good for someone who's looking for a super telephoto lens with a APS-C camera for starting at wildlife photography within budget.
Is there an option to run DOOM on the little screen? ;)
Hey Chris, I’m shooting a F1 race soon and I’m stuck between this and the 70-300 L lens, I have the money for it but is the image quality difference of the L worth giving up the extremely fast AF, which is really important in F1 and other motorsports ? ,,,I’m using a Canon 80d
is it a good lens for aviation photography ?
Hello is this lens is better then 55-250 is stm?
Can I use this lens for photography at birthday events? Few says it has a real focusing issue. Not sure why….
