Hi Chris, love you work especially the detailed manner you conduct your tests. Awesome job. Quick question: I recently brought Canon EF 501.4 USM and using it on Canon RP. Honestly images look very sharp wide open in the centre without any noticeable ghosting Do u think the recently manufactured lenses would be better than the ones you tested 6years ago? DO companies change coatings or something on the recently manufactured stuff? Also Do u think I should go for 50 1.8 RF (new one) or keep 50 1.4 USM I am a hobbist, travel photographer. Thanks a lot, keep up the great work.

Hi chris. Curious for a reliablity report on your experience with this. I see it has got noisy and stiffer. How long had you been using it? Is it still ok? No one seems to talk in detail about durability and lense mechanisms
Looks like the nifty fifty 1.8 StM performs better than that lens for about triple less the price.

Bought this as a 'holiday' lens and it works fine on and old SLR. It's not really a digital lens. It works well for travel.
I just purchased this lens so am very excited to see how it performs with my 6D and my 1500D in low light - I love both of my cameras but I have too many lenses so now have to get the bag down to 3 or 4 instead of 8 lenses
I used to have the Canon EF 50mm F1.4 and I had problems with the lens which is if you make a mistake and end up been hit at then it end up not working and it will cost You over £100 getting it fixed so I got rid of it and got the Canon EF 50MM F1.2Lc

LOL at "The image is just about usable." I want a bit more than "just about usable" from my camera lenses.
Such a shame this lens isn't much cop - especially now it's unlikely Canon will ever do an updated version given the rush to mirrorless. I was really hoping for a new version similar to the EF 35mm f2 IS, which is a cracking little lens as you say.

I have this lens for years and really like it. My auto focus stopped working all together at one point but I was able to fix it myself. There are tutorials on youtube, but you'd have to disassemble the lens completely including the electronic with it's flex cables. If you want to prevent the focusing problem all together, leave the lens hood on at all times, even when stored. The problem with the lens is that it has an aluminum frame inside that deforms when you bump the moving front element into something. This front element can be protected by leaving the hood on.
Mine broke after being a trooper for many years. The inner lens barrel was so deformed i can't fix without ordering the part. I ended up getting a good deal on a sigma 50 1.4 hsm ex but will still order the part i need to fix my beloved canon.
After playing around olympus for a miniframe, i am a little bit afraid how non-compact lens for 1.6 of frame looks like D:
