I remember when i first started. My boss gives me a 10 pound and he was fussing at me for not being able to drive it. When the cement workers saw what was going on they fussed him and said u gave him to small of a hammer. They brought me a 16 and it was on after that.
When I was framing we used a 20 pounder. Every other crew I knew had a beat to hell 20 pounder they'd use on the occasions they needed it. When I started I couldn't hardly swing the damn thing but before I left I could pound a silt fence into the ground without breaking a sweat

My little story: I'm a female in a male dominated job I've only met 2 people who genuinely showed me the ropes but typically I have to catch on (I work in landscaping and irrigation and also worked with us forestry, calfire, the city, built trails and so much more) but sadly being a female actually sets you back just because of your gender a lot of the time 😒 but I dont give up so easily and that typically offends the machismo guys 🤷‍♀️ nothing is going to hold me back from what I want .

Catus, Looks like I will be demo-ing a concrete patio, in the spring What do you think of the cross or curved ends on some of the newer sledge hammers designs, Like the Dewalt 12lb or the Roughneck Gorilla sledge hammer. Do you think it is worth getting ? I am also debating 10lb or 12lb ?
I made a "thor" hammer out of a 6 lb sledge cut down to 14" on the handle and wrapped it part way with electrical tape. By far the best decision I've made.

Bring them to an oil rig and they wont last long... and the wood is best for oil base mud on the handle. The rubber is slick AF! All we use is 12 & 16 & a few 20's lbs'ers...
Good to know about considering the length of the handle for specific work space
I worked for a circus tent company one summer. We used 3' metal stakes, about 1" diameter to anchor the tent legs to the ground. I drove about 20 of them a day. We had a lot of generic 8lb fiberglass sledge hammers that occasionally broke and needed replacement. However, one previous employee had broken so many that the boss bought a Wilton bash hammer at some point for that specific employee to use. This hammer had almost no green paint left on it, and the collar had been smashed through to the point the internal rebar was visible. The head was still solid and there was no sign of bending or failure of the handle. They are pretty tough.

I work for a Paving co. in Western Washington as a grade hop and grader operator . We use 10 and 12 pound hammers to drive 10" hubs aka stakes(hard ground hubs break or explode so we sledge pound a 18"steele jackhammer bit to make a usable hole 1st) into the ground as elevation and boarder markers for grade and placing gravel as needed for drainage and proper base slope prepped for paving . Swinging a sledge windmill style all day is a big part of a groundmans job many days , I agree balance is important between heavy enough and too heavy . More weight is helpful sometimes but I prefer my 10 these days , I find the shape and length of handle is most important , Anything used so much needs to be a good fit for the operator as well as the task at hand ideally . Most of us cut and sand our handles as needed . I just bought 2 new hammers both kobalt 10 pounders from lowes 1 standard sledge and 1 with a fat girthy dense wedge and hammerhead together looks real handy , I get to try them out tomorrow.

I love Fiskars quality. I have a splitting maul that I just love by them. I also own a few more Fiskar's products. Definitely an underrated company.
Had got a Fiskars pruners and broke them. (The handle broke.) Threw them in the garage trash. I was really disappointed. They didn't last long at all. I was actually watching Stan on dirt monkey and he was at a show with Fiskars. They said it was life time warranty and how easy it was to return by simply contacting them and sending them a picture. Dug those suckers out of the trash a month later took a picture and had a new warranty replacement in my hand in a couple weeks. That right there sold me for ever on the Fiskars brand.

They are from Finland. Most things made there or USA still I believe.
Fiskars definitely make top quality tools, and I have no doubt that these sledgehammers are very nicely built and comfortable to hold and use.
