the opening on the back is not a handle, it's a port to allow the speakers to breathe and push air that is required for base. Look at a sub-woofer, unless it's an enclose sub, it will have a port on the either the front or back.

Bose Sound 20, great sound. Horrible everything else. Never works smoothly, interface slow, not simple. Tried to be sleek but is simply frustrating. I have two, app needed to work well and sync together, but the app never works well. Disappointed with this (not cheap purchase) won't be going back to Bose.
Do you need to use the app in order to connect via bluetooth?
I cannot connect to the Soundtouch app. I have tried for a couple of hours now on several different apparatus. Just absolutely useless. Just an expensive speaker. It is shameful that Bose does not fix its app as it is clear from googling that most people have a problem with the app.
Hate this thing, never works smooth for me, so I took it to my office. Trying to setup again but never shows up on my wifi network. Must be a trick someplace.

stopped powering up after a year...just taking up space now
Just bought a 20 and a 30 and although the sound is INCREDIBLE, setting up the app is a PAIN IN THE ASS! It took me a good 2 hours to try to get the Soundtouch App setup only to figure out that the only way to get the damn thing to setup is by unplugging EVERY Wi-Fi device in my house so that my Bose speakers get all the undivided attention from the router. As soon as I did that, the "please wait" on the setup went away almost immediately and got this thing set up in 2 minutes. What kind of bullshit setup is this, Bose?

As far as functionality, it does everything an Echo does. I would imagine the sound is much much better than an Echo. $500 for a big big Echo without voice control. I don't know about this one.

These were made to replace the Bose sound dock 10 which I considered to be the best sounding speakers ever. I had them for years until they were discontinued and I shopped around and couldn’t find anything that came close so had to buy the SoundTouch 30 instead. IMO they are the best sounding speakers at the moment. Absolutely love them. Flossy is right, nothing else comes close for the price.

It’s weight comes from the subwoofer. It’s a true subwoofer. The SoundTouch 30 gets its main speaker design from the SoundDock 10 which when it came out was/is a remarkable speaker. I bought my SoundDock 10 when it was first released over 10 years ago. Nothing could touch it. The downside was when Apple decided to change the docking station to the lightning connector it made that $600 speaker obsolete and I had bought it 2 months before that happened!! I did end up having to buy a Bose Bluetooth adapter that would work with my new iPhone but that was an additional $129 plus tax and shipping so I paid almost $800 for the damn thing. BOSE did end up selling a SoundDock-10 Series 2 edition that was Bluetooth enabled and they sold it for the same $600 price. Needless to say BOSE fucked me out of $129+. Since then I’ve NEVER gotten the first generation of ANY new BOSE product. I don’t even think they make the SoundTouch line anymore because they’re not on their website. I still love BOSE products but they really do charge a premium for what you get and their build quality is not all that great but that’s just my opinion.

I bought the 10 for my wife and I, for Christmas, but decided in mid-December to go with the big boy 30. So the ST30 is right here in my living room, and the wee one is in my bedroom on my nightstand, a more suitable spot for the 10. The 30, mmmmmmm, eargasms galore!! This thing makes every genre of music sound phenomenal. I love it!!!
I’ve had one for over a year. Where do I start? I can’t describe how badass this thing is. Installed a converter and strapped it onto my motorcycle. It’s the only one I could hear at any speed. Took it to work, a big factory. Blew everything else away. Just amazing. Only complaint, can not add a subwoofer. Bose installed a delay, so lining into a sub, then lining out into the 30 wont work. Pisses me off. The one small subwoofer inside has a 150 watt amp driving it though. Does have limitations. If you listen to rap or deep base, you need to pay attention so as not to fuck it up.
