Edit: me confusing Cardi B with Nicki Minaj is now the whitest thing you will hear in 2020
Why is it that I like his features, but his actual songs are trash.
Examples of features:
All Time Low, Machine Gun Kelly, YUNGBLUD and I like all of them for some reason.
But then you got "Pulling up with an emo chick that's broken."
I absolutely adore blackbear like this afterglow phase when we was doing more soul like stuff but yeah this album was garbage besides me and ur ghost
everything means nothing was so bad
Everything means nothing by toe is the only worthwhile thing titled that (everything means nothing to me by Elliott smith is also valid)
really? dude I
like his album but you are kind of right.
I gotta hard disagree with you here, but respect your opinion. I mean I think the tracks fit this year pretty well, personally.
dude im not even good at knowing music is bad but even I hated this album it was so fucking bad
i don't think you like blackbear
I wondered why you never reviewed blackbear and I now know why haha
Oh God thanks for reminding me that I saw him as the opening band to Fall out was better then him
Whoops. I love Hot Girl Bummer and thought this album was alright. Guess I’ll go listen to Cordae instead.
Tbh I think you're just not a blackbear fan.
If you see true blackbear fans everyone is happy w this album.
Idk what your musical taste is, but just stop listening to blackbear you clearly just don't like his music
That “Roller Coaster” line is literally discount Y2K Blink-182 Even though Blink-182 i would take them over BlackBear
So much hate for Blackbear I guess I just fit his niche
blackbears good projects (these are the ones you should listen to):
1. "the afterglow" EP (in order)
2. "deadroses" Album
3. "dead" (acoustic ep)
4. "drink bleach" and "cashmere noose" Eps
5. "Mansionz" Album
Good songs that aren't on there: princess complex, spent all my money on rick owens cargo pants, run me over, cancel forever.
Try to completely forget about what you heard from him after mid 2017 and go into this with an open mind.
on the off chance blackbear himself stumbles over this comment, I mean no disrespect, what you do with your carreer is entirely up to you, your music got me through some shit, I was a big fan back in the day and this is just my opinion.
(long comment, but worthwhile I hope)
Very interesting video! I was a big blackbear fan back in his soundcloud days around 2016. I disliked this album and did not enjoy the last 2 projects either. I think a lot of the points you make about his lyrics are valid and all in all, the music is just very boring now.
But! Blackbears music was very important to me which is why I want to show you what you missed out on, and do blackbears music justice. You (understandably) chose to listen to his last two albums, this one and anonymous. These might be representative of the artist he is now, but are not at all representative of his entire carreer.
In my eyes RnB artist blackbear before 2017 and the pop artist Blackbear after 2017 have nothing to do with each other.
I think blackbear is a very interesting example of how a persons art changes drastically, after a life defining event.
In 2017 blackbear was very close to dying, due to his severe drinking problem and drug use. Luckily he was saved by surgery and wrote his 2017 album digital druglord in the hospital. He still has to go to the hospital every few months, because of his chronic pancreatitis, whis is a condition that flares up every now and then, causing intense pain.
After this, he stopped drinking and quit drugs (or at least stopped taking as many, I'm not sure). He completely turned his life around. Then, he sadly wen't through another unhappy relationship with his former Girlfriend, but after their breakup, he got together with his now wife michele maturo. The two have a baby now and seem very happy.
So in short, he is now 30 has a wife and kid and is off the drugs. I am very happy for him, but as with many artists the music was way more interesting in his wilder days. I guess you can't be surprised, People don't make dark alternative RnB anymore when they are happily married.
So my suggestion to you is to (if you have the time) give his discografy (as blackbear, not before) a listen from the beginning. I think his best work was everything from the "afterglow ep" on, up until "Mansionz".
After an ep and a mixtape of figuring himself out blackbear dropped his first notable project titled "the afterglow EP". This Ep is arguably some of his best work and still beloved among his longtime fans. The production is dark, slow and experimental and blackbears vocals are top notch. The songs flow into each other, the interludes are amazing, which is why you have to listen to this project in order.
Next he dropped his lighter dreamy summer RnB album "Deadroses". It's an amazing debut album and includes his first (kind of) hit "idfc". This one is also a fan favourite.
His next Album titled "Help" is more druggy, rappy RnB and is'nt as consistent as the two projects before. It was'nt as beloved among fans as deadroses, but I still liked it, their are some very cool songs on there.
After this he dropped 2 eps called "drink bleach" and "cashmere noose" which I both love. There are two versions of cashmere noose though, the one on apple music doesn't include one of my favourite songs "princess complex".
The last project I liked of his, came out in 2017 and was a collaborative album with mike posner called Mansionz. The two have been friends for a long time and really bring out the best in each other musically. They rented a cabin for a week or so and made the whole album in one go. This album is also meant to be listened to in order.
Apparently he was on drugs the whole time they made the album though, this was shortly before the shift in his music.
Digital druglord (the one he wrote in the hospital), had a few good songs, but It was the first sign of the music to come, which I really don;t like. His vocals got worse too, I first noticed that on this album.
So what should you listen to, to hear blackbear at his best? I recommend you listen to
1. "the afterglow" (in order)
2. "deadroses"
3. "dead" (acoustic ep)
4. "drink bleach" and "cashmere noose"
5. "Mansionz" (and Help is cool too)
If you read through all of this, thanks for listening and I would be interested to hear what you think!
I'll drop the recommendations in a seperate comment in case you or others don;t want to sift through all of this.
i like "hot girl bummer". the beat is hypnotic to me and i like his pitch shifting
so from what I know it's not a "2 part album" but he released the album in 2 separate parts, dropping the first three singles over time, then dropping the next three songs all at once, then dropping the other 6 songs pretty close togetheryeah
side note, I actually really vibe with both Deadroses and digital druglord. IMO they are pretty cohesive pieces of work and I would even say digital druglord has some of bears best writing and production to date. but yea this not good *EXPLOSION*
Listen, I’m not a fan of the phrase “Sad Boi music” cause I just think that phrase is used to make excuses on why a person doesn’t want to hear a man sing about their feelings, but goddamn, if this isn’t the most Sad Boi music I’ve heard, I seriously don’t know what is.
If I resurrect the Hitler brand, can I sell it at a 2000% markup? I can put together a special Meine Ehre heißt Treue Harley Davidson even older than a panhead.
By far the best garments I’ve ever wore. Built to last a lifetime.
