I second the recommendation to get dark brown or burgundy first. My black monk straps and tan monk straps could only be worn with certain combinations. Never been a fan of the elastic at the buckle. Great channel.

I'm late to the party, but with a double monk strap, is it ok and/advisable to mirror shine (or attempt to) the part that straps over? It doesn't crease because of where it sits and it's a nice flat smooth surface. I just don't know how it'll look.

Can you explain why this type of shoe would not look good with a 3P suit? I wear my black monk strap shoes with my navy 3P suit as well as a navy double breasted suit and I swear I look elegant. The sole & heel are more formal so it's a dress shoe. Why would you say that it only works best with Grey or charcoal?

Have to admit I'm not a fan of going sock-less with monk straps (the same way you could with loafers), especially with a suit. Sorry, it just comes off as a bit douchey imho. The monks themselves are stylish enough, and if nothing else, get socks that match the trousers but stand out a little more with their style (stripes/a pattern/etc.). Just my 2 cents. Sorry, but "elegant" is never meant to be more complicated. The single monk is sleeker because there IS less going on, and more of the actual vamp is showing. That makes it more elegant. The double is very trendy, meaning popular (for now). They look bulky, even very expensive ones. Single is wonderful but double is good casual shoe.

Single monks are my favorite shoes. Sleek and elegant. I wear no break hemmed pants so double monks show both buckets and can look very busy.

For me, I'd put double monks third on my list. My first pair would be Oxford brogues, and then cap-toe Oxfords. I find double-monks look no less formal than Oxfords though. The buckle is far more elegant than laces.

I think my list for needed foot ware is: 1. A pair of black laced dress shoes/Wing Tips 2. A pair of clean casual sneakers 3. A pair old sneakers for the gym and grass cutting 4. A pair of boots rated for rain and snow. 5 and below. All other shoes (including monks)
