Thanks for the tip of using vinegar to remove a seized stem in that other video. It worked for me!!
Trank you looked half a year for something like this
Ty for the help!
Thank you! This is what i needed.
hi sir ! can i ask ? what is the size of your stem adapter and new stem?
Hi RJ, so i have a 22.2mm inner diameter fork tube. What size of fork tube extender do i need?
I'm getting confused about the 1" 1/8 size. Is it 20.8? 22.2mm? Or 25.4mm? Stem adapter size. Bikeshops are close due to pandemic so i have to order online :( Need some tips guys. I dont have a measuring tool.
Very helpfully thanks
Hi RJ. Great video! What threadless stem do you use with this adapter?
Do I need to use spacers to adjust the stem height??? Or can I just raise the height of the adapter and tighten it, and then tighten the stem??? Or do they make a different type of stem adapter ???
Now u have 101 comments congrats. Sub to pewdiepie!!!
On a road bike or an mtb bike that sees light trail use why do you want a threadless headset.
does the size of the stem adapter matter?
Is safe?
Love your videos. I learn a lot, very helpful.
u didnt grease the threadless stem
Its more complicated...you got handlebar thickness...quill diameter...stem size...and how much beer you drink divided the amount of calories you consumed on Wednesday.
What size stem fits the adapter?
What size was the new threadless stem?

I have been trying to find a quill stem to convert my old roadster to a more aggressive and classic looking fixie and it just breaks my heart to see you cut through one. 😅😅😅
2:10 Before Dremeling the old stem, probably going to want to work it loose from the forks. On old bikes the quill stem probably isn't going to slide right out 2:46 this easy. Once you Dremel and break the bars out, it's going to be even more difficult to work the stem loose from the bike. Very glad this video was here. It was a helpful eye opener to the process.
he broke the bike, the classic stem looks so much better
Queda espantoso,mejor era antes.
I'm going to be "that" guy. I was told to avoid putting grease on the quill, just spread it around in the fork so you reduce the risk of grease getting between the stem and clamping area on the adapter. I saw you put grease on the quill adapter then slide the stem onto the adapter, if not careful you can get grease underneath the stem which might cause it to slide loose. I really like your videos. I probably watch at least one a week, even if I'm not farting around on my bikes.
Now, why would you do that? They look so clumsy on a beautiful classic bike.
Sacrificed a quick stem? Maybe not for me
What are the odds I find this with the exact same bike I’m changing 👍
This is what im looking for !
You are the best RJ !! Hey could I at the same time install a new head set for thread less steerer tube? as a 1" head set right?
Size of quill stem?
does this only work with the handle bars or can you have a threadless fork in there?
I would simply buy a 1" Threadless stem and a fork long enough to stick at the top
You don't need a quill adapter, just a long enough fork and the appropriate size stem (usually 1 inch for old bikes that used threaded quill stems), or you can use a shim
The problem I have with this specific adapter is that it does not sit all the way into the steerer tube, but I suppose that's an issue with having a smaller frame. The other thing? They don't come in black. I'm actually putting this on something similar, a 92 1400, and the red with black and chrome looks a bit funky. I just really hate the exposed bit below the stem itself. I think I may try the Origin8 one, all of the cheap chinese no name ones I have tried have been so poorly manufactured so I think it may be better getting one from an actually known company.
Hey RJ i like your videos! Look, i am looking to buy a quill to threadless adapter but i am unsure about the size. My quill stem measured by caliper is 21.9. Will the 22.2 mm adapter fit good? Is the closest size i've found on market. Cheers!
After doing this would it be possible to swap out the headset for a Threadless style headset?
Yo RJ. Every time I look up a "how to" when I'm working on my bike, I always find your videos. I can't count the number of times your videos have helped me out. I love learning to work on my own bike, and I've been able to save a ton of money restoring my 90's road bike from the ground up, thanks to your videos.
Show your face at least once, my guy. You're giving me home improvement vibes 😂
Please view the updated video on how to adjust the preload on the headset bearings: Hope Head Doctor Into Steerer Tube Extender https://youtu.be/Gy264za1SIk I added a headset cap (top cap) and star fangled nut into the adapter.
u should used the compression plug..
Hey so I got my adapter in good, got a little wobble but I'm waiting on a shim to keep it from wobbling but my adapter isn't staying solid, I can twist my bars and adapter while tightened completely. What can I do to avoid this?
I think you just saved me some suffering. Thank you.
Can i put different top cap?
In my case their is still a flower attached on my fork, do I need to get rid of that in order to install the extender?
Is this ok with the carbon forks?
What if, if my headset is sealed bearing its is compatible?? This my problem now🥺I hope you help me and I hope you notice thanks brother
How much is it?
dla czego kapsel nie dociska mostka?!!
Where can I buy this?
Idk If you still read the comments on this video still but at 1:34 when you tighten the top bolt what does it thread into?
Very helpful. Thanks.
I think in this example only the stem is holding on the fork with no preload. I think you have to use your own top cap that is wider in diameter to preload am I right. In this case the top cap is flush with the tube so there is no preload being used in this example.
looks great!!
How do you set the preload with star nut?
I have a 28.6mm steerer tube but lenght is short i need to extend.
How if my fork diameter (diameter of the tube was 22,2 which adaptor stem i use for it ? What size, is it 22.2 or below such as 21 ? Thank u so much for your answers
Do you need a star nut for this?
Holy crap no one actually do this... This is wildly unsafe. No preloading of the bearings is also going to cause premature wear. Please please don't do this to your bike
Just cut it shorter at the same angle
very helpful mate
get ya hands dirty man! Its part of the process! :)
I did buy one of these adaptors, it fits inside perfect, but my headset moves under pressure
2 things that I’ve learned in my 37 years never trust a guy to work on a bike who wears latex gloves or at least gloves that don’t fit or a guy who takes the face of the stem all the way off to put bars on
Hi Reggie, what brand of stem is that, do you have a product code. Thanks
amazing
Is that type of adapter good or bad, because some people say it’s dangerous and all that stuff
Really looks good, female will be happy.
Nice video was wondering can the top cap be replaced with other top caps now that are 1 1/8.
hahahaha!!!
They viewers don’t care about your girl or her bike accident.
I bought the wrong adapter . Can I grind the 25.4 to 22.2mm ?
Why can’t I find a 1 1/8 inch (28.6 mm) quill stem ? My project has come to a complete halt because of this issue. Is there a bicycle store where you live that has one of what I’m looking for ? Thank you
what did you do to the front brakes?
Mechanically it would have been better/safer to cut the adapter shorter. (At the same angle as previously). As now you are clamping against a sloping surface and smaller diameter. A good jolt and the wedge can work itself to the upper portions of the steerer tube with the larger diameter. Meaning your handlebars will be loose. Good show either way.
Thank for this mate
How did the twitchy short stem do for her confidence?
you unscrewed the quill too much you're only supposed to losen it so the expansion of the two pieces that tighten the quill in place reduces so you can pull the quill out from the frame no good making tutorials if you don't actually know what you're doing lol
At this point at 3:15 all you had to do was take a mallet/hammer and tap down on the stem bolt to unstick the wedge nut.
