while it's a small pain, I keep old beyond-use wheels for spoke-scavenging. if for some reason I don't keep a freehub wheel, I do salvage the freehub off of it; it's easy to do, doesn't require much storage space, and it's handy to have known-working spares.
So how did you remove the freewheel hub?
You are the first guy who used chain tool properly. 👍👏
The new Shimano hubs are absolute junk, stick with the older Deore ones, LX(SLX with steel axles.
Good video and explanation thanks
Great videos my kids also like to watch keep up the good work
I've been a shop mechanic and Pro team mechanic for 30 years and have never seen a cracked Shimano freehub body, it is strange that, great channel by the way
Thank U 👍🏼
brother. How much longer could you ride on this temporary solution before you purchased a new? How much total distsnce did you ride before breaking the cups. Btw awesome fix. wasnt aware something like this could be done
If you want to do a proper repair (if there's damage all the way round) you can put the axle/cones in a drill, wrap a piece of sandpaper around a drill bit and re-grind a new bearing surface on the cone. There doesn't seem to be any videos on YouTube about people doing this, but I've heard it mentioned a couple of times on reddit.
Don't forget when you install the wheel on the bike, to keep the axle with the worn face up
