I think that by the time you've got your head around the basic logic gate concepts, built the adding machine etc. At that point, you don't have to have a full grasp of the more complicated implementations to have gained a fairly in-depth understanding/overview. Code is written for the lay-person and I think that as a book it does what it sets out to achieve. I can well imagine a fair few lay-persons having first skimmed it, then deciding to go for a deeper dive. Mission accomplished for Petzold.

+1 this is one of my favorite books of all time. Also, I recommend the Nand2Tetris site and book for a similar (albeit more advanced) journey into understanding the inner workings of computers.

I Love that book, it starts with story of two friends and how they communicate with help of circuitsand they way of explanation is awesome.
