The protest was called by the League Against Calcinations. Early environmental protest pioneers. They had concerns about the open air pyrite roasting that was taking place at the mine. The sulphurous fumes were causing acid rain, health issues, agricultural issues and constant dust and smoke. Around 12,000 were at the protest. Farmers, miners, men women and children. They were dispersed by the local cavelry regiment who managed to shoot and bayonet around 200 of them. Rio Tinto has the same regard for workers and local populations today as it had back in 1888.
