Sennheiser E 965 Microphone Reviews from YouTube

Sennheiser e 965 Review vs Shure SM58 vs Earthworks SR40V + Singing Sample
TUTORIAL: e 965 Vocal Condenser Microphone | Sennheiser
Using The e965, M88 & KSM8
Covering Bill - using the Sennheiser e965
I learned a lot from your very instructive microphone reviews. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! This review made me try the Sennheiser e 965 myself. I found the difference in sound between cardoid and supercardoid quite noticeable. It depended on the headphones which pattern I preferred. It surprised me that it felt as if I had to overcome a resistance in the microphone. In other words singing required quite some effort. To me the e 965 was not very fast, more like a dynamic microphone, maybe because the diaphragm is quite large. With an Electro-Voice RE520 I had the same feeling of resistance. In contrast, for me the Audio-Technica AE3300 is very fast, has a nice round bass with lots of detail, does not give me this resistance and singing feels effortless. It has a large dynamic range, more than the e 965. The AE3300 puts a smile on my face and makes me experiment with my voice. PS: The e 965 I tested did not have a hum.
Another amazing review. Earthworks impresses me all the time.
Anton, did Sennheiser ever get back to you about the hum? i bought one of these mics and had to return it. The mic was completely unusable due to that hum when plugged into my XVive U3c wireless transmitter. i haven't encountered this noise using the XVive with any other mic except this one.
The Senn sounded great ‘till you picked up the Earthworks
you are great, I just love you

"Uniquely forceful" when you have to bang its rigid steel enclosure over the head of the audience that's storming the stage!
I'd like to share my experiences with the e965 mic and hopefully someone out there could suggest me what I need to do to improve its sound quality on the mic. On the Mackie profx8v2, I set the U-Gain up to 4 o'clock at about 48+ almost hit to the max along with the volume fader up to 10dB or more, phantom power 48v enabled. but the mic doesn't pick up much sound as I expected ? I also tried it on the different audio mixer profx8v3 but still it behaviors the same. The 10dB gain switch of the mic does not seem to support much ? Thank You!
Excellent review and bonus points for the monocle.
Great Review. Thanks a lot.
Bravo !
That is a huge noticable difference between the Sure 58 and the Sennheiser. Sounds like an excellent mic.
Thank You for your great reviews on these microphones.
Gorgeous sound
This was ENTERTAINING! I thank you sir!
Very nice job showing this mic, so few understand all the parameters, angle, distance etc, this was comprehensive, thank you so much.
Anton Browne where can a person get the alternative microphone case you displayed in this video? Loved the video your my favorite on utube'er for mic reviews. Thumbs Up!
Thank You!
Thanks for your time.
How can someone dislike this?!
Love my wireless version of this 965. It crazy good I didn't know I can sing like that. Wow.
angel video
hows that holy singerr
Actually after a little bit of my own research what you described between e965 and m88 is called the transient response of the diaphram, I think it's actually the real differences between 100$ mic and 200-400 dynamic mic. Think of it as inertia of a car, a larger diaphragm (as truck, thus heavier and less tension) will smooth of the grainy vibrato/vocal, adding warm and muddyness (unable to stop on extremely lower frequency), sudden dynamic change, in short time frame and etc. A lighter or smaller diaphragm (as bicycle, thus much lighter and had better brake (more tension)), which will capture more accurate high, tighter bass (detailed bass), light nuances, brighter and more grainny (but detailed). One thing to be noted is transient response isn't equal to diaphragm sensitivity, it's actually sensitivity plus vibration frequency response time particularly at extremely higher and low end of frequency. That being said, the reason I stumbled on your video is recently I found my current dynamic mic had lower transient response than I desired so I'm actually looking for an upgrade. I'm trying to find a dynamic mic which had the transient response of a condenser mic, but in the same time with little warm/presense and not overly bright. I was looking at KSM8 cause they said it had dual diaphragm built in and supposedly one is passive and the other is active (power by battery) and thus greatly enhance the transient response. It was pretty much true to their advertising cause I find the transient response (listening to overdrive guitar demonstration) is acceptable BUT they actually sacrifice whole high frequency range to make your sound more power and thick (-30db roll off starting at 9k). This might be good thing in speech deliver or singer that don't like their higher part of their voice. It's depend on user requirement, but for some serious singer which had very wide vocal range it's pretty much a "lackluster". Like you, I like to incorporating my higher timbre and harmonies into my vocal. So I like the mic also able to capture some of my voice higher frequency harmonies, especially when I can also do limited soprano opera singing. After seeing a few detail review I don't think the KSM8 suit me, I mean cutting off at 14k and starting roll off -12 to -18db is pretty common but this frequency response is "too safe" for my taste for not even within -12db until 16k. Well, last but not least. Since I'm new to the recording field, would appreciate if you can suggest some dynamic mic that can rival condenser mic in details and transient responses. I'm considering Akg D7, EV ND96 and still researching for more. It's the 1st time I heard about m88 but I think m88's EQ really isn't optimized for male vocal, the proximity effect is also not very good and i don't have a lots of mic technique given I owned only 1 dynamic mic so far.
I bought the e965 and had to return it. It had a very noticeable hum when plugged into my XVive U3c wireless transmitter, and I don't have this issue with any other mic I own. (Neumann KMS105, Shure KSM9, Telefunken M80, Sennheiser e945, etc). I believe you mentioned this noise floor in another one of your videos.
Very much agree with your summations. The 965 transient response really suits tenor and soprano, the slower low end transient response fills out a sound and still lets the faster transient articulation feature. One inch capsule provides so much information doesn't it. I own a KSM8, but rarely use it, to my ears, it doesn't excel at anything and is a bit boring. I suppose my empassioned thoughts on the M88 is what led me to this channel, it's a microphone that has a balanced transient response, not sure I'd call it faster but it presents low mid detailed and articulation frequencies beautifully. It's a very classy sounding microphone be it on kick or vocals. On a boomy stage in a early reflection room, it is the rejection king. I'm not fussed whether it's N(C) or a TG, to me they each get on with the job nicely. That you like a particular mic goes a long way to getting the most out of it,but unlike most singers, you know your voice well enough to know what you like whereas many singers find a mic they are drawn to for other reasons and insist on using them, even they aren't necessarily the best suited. At the end of the day, these are all really good microphones. And for no other reason than a massive pallete of choice, why use a boring sounding microphone? Stay safe and well ️
KSM 8 actually sounded great, you can almost get ‘over-detail’ sometimes on live vocals at the expense of ‘balancedness’ and solidity, the KSM 8 seems to just have a nice balance, you can tell it was designed to be a high end specifically ‘live’ mic
e965 sounds a tad boomy, M88 nice detail but a little scooped in the mids, KSM8 had, to my ears, more mid beef but sounds a little 'distant' - guess it's built for very close micking. I find it interesting how, to me, the perceived mic performance based on singing samples differs from the spoken word performance - maybe give the KMS105 a 2nd chance? THANKS for putting this comparison together!
nice voice! what’s your favourite dynamic mic?
Love your microphone reviews, among the most thorough on YouTube. These covers have been a treat this past year as well, can’t wait to see you out performing live again.
Great job, 965 is one of my favorite mics that sound great on anyone with a good voice.
Great sound and singing! I used my brand new e965 the other night at our gig at Daryl’s House Club. It was wonderful! The sound engineer loved it, and said he was ordering one when he got home. There is a stream up of the show if you want to hear the mic in action. I used it in super cardioid mode, and used the bass cut as well. The band is Dead Letter Office International Tribute To R.E.M.
He knows!
Thank you for your art
great version!
