Hi Chris, thanks for your reviews. I own the 23 mm F1.4 and I am wondering about the not so sharp results at f 1.4 in the center in your review. I have very good results on my copy. Here is another comparation between 23mm F1.4 vs 23mm f2, there is F1.4 sharper then 23mm at f2. See there: https://mirrorlesscomparison.com/x-mount-lenses/fuji-23mm-f1-4-vs-23mm-f2/
The tested copy of the lens is pretty badly decentered.
How is the longitudinal chromatic aberration?
do you think this lens could work better with xt30?
02:16: *62mm filter size
This is probably one of the best lenses in the fuji line! If only it wasn’t so damn BIG!!!
I wished ASMR would focus on the strengths of this lens = focus clutch. And how to use it !
The focal length alone is great when shooting in 4K on a Fuji X-T series camera because the output footage is often "zoomed" at 1.18x. 23mm multiplied by 1.18 is 27mm (3mm below the "normal" lens focal length which is 30mm).
Mere Christianity! The book that converted me.
Quick tip if you're using depth focussing (say for street photography) - pull back the focus clutch on the lens and set your manual focussing distance. Set the focus switch on your camera to manual focus, then lock the focus clutch on the lens back to the AF setting. Your manual focus distance is now locked in and you can't jog the focus ring accidentally to change it. Note that if you have an AF lock button set, pressing this will cause the camera to refocus, so be careful with that.
I love this lens! Gave me stunning photos. The only problem is how it felt mounted in a tiny body of a fuji camera. It was uncomfortable.
Filter size is 62mm not 72
I still wait for a more modern design at this pricepoint.
Good quick review 👍
CS Lewis sucks...
Hey Chris, I totally love your reviews. And I also love, that you keep reviewing Fuji now.
You could do me a favour by testing the Zeiss 32mm 1.8. Would be great!
Looks like saint Albans
Naturally sharp Fuji lens dont even need to post sharp samples for video :) Try 23 f2 you would be surprised ;)
Nice review man! You should review the xf f/2 series . They say they are incredible lenses!
My favorite Fuji lens I've used so far.
At f/1.4 the center seems a bit sharper on my copy, sample variation I guess.
I've always been very impressed with it when I open up the files in Lightroom. Love the character of the images it creates.
Have also owned the 23/2, which is probably the more useful and sensible option for most people (with its smaller size, weight and price, faster AF. and weather sealing) and definitely a great lens, but I preferred the rendering of the 1.4.
Thanks for the review! I love the lens, as well. I just bought the square lens hood for it and wow! It looks so amazing with it! And I was blown away by the quality of the original Fuji hood. It´s rather pricey but it reeks quality! It is quite heavy so I guess it all metal. Anyway, it´s very, very solid and gives the lens the style it deserves- especially on an x-pro camera...:)
Great review! You've earned my subscription :)
Well argued for the 1.4, with great image examples. Nice vid.
hi, how is the performance with low light enverionment like inside the restaurant without flash
This review is perfect. It shows the product well. Also presents some samples and give useful advice. Well done!
Just bought this lens and stumbled upon this review. Glad I got it now. Great review and you have a new sub from me!
That the lens looses sharpness from f11 onward is the result of the physical effect of diffraction. Check Christopher Frost who tests these effects quite effectively.
im inbetween the f2.0 and this one but this one dosen't have the weather sealing. in your oppinion how important is the weather sealing i mean if it gets alittle bit wet or dusty it breaks the lens no?
Audio needs a HPF! Great video otherwise!
3:40 that's not strange at all, it happens on all APS-C lenses. It's called diffraction.
23mm 1.4 is sharper than 35mm 1.4, according to both my testing and confirmed by Lenstip's testing. It really doesn't look like it though, but upon closer inspection I was quite surprised to see that it is. I think the coating softens the rendering or something, I mean look at the 35 and 23 and you'll see the 35 has a much shinier front element. Not sure though.
Wow definitely a battle 😅😅 saw the scars 😅 image is crispy ❤️❤️❤️👍
Get your Fuj XF 23mm f/1.4:
Hi Damian, I love your vids mate, could you tell me how much better the 1.4 is than the f2?
I'm still undecided between this and the f2 version. Is the WR feature really that necessary or is it just a marketing gimmick? Have you noticed any dust, haze, etc present through the years of use compared to your WR lenses?
Absolutely loving your reviews!!! As a fuji user for 6 years its great to see you talk about fuji which i absolutely love.i love the fuji F2 lenses for they're better micro contrast and stealth, and i love the fuji F1.4 lenses for the aperture and colour rendering.
lovin your reviews - subscribed. I can only afford one lens with my new T30 and I'm thinking this one. I'm not a fan of getting "average" lenses. I'd rather have 1 or 2 super sharp/fast ones than loads of average ones.
I use this lens as a standard part of my kit. It is fantastic. I use it with my XH1 and I love it immensely. Highly recommend this lens for street photography and portraits.
Hi, what do you thinks about 23mmf2? 23mmf1.4 and 23mmf2, what is your choice?
Too big too heavy.
its a classic. got it in your bag yet?
Hi Damian, do you have a flickr or 500px page to see some images from your range of primes? I'm trying to think what to get, 16mm, 23mm, 35mm or 16-55 f2.8. I currently have the 56mm f1.2 but find it can be quite difficult to usei n tight spaces.
Another excellent impartial video I have this in my kit but just don’t use it often enough especially as I usually go to my favourite Zeiss Touit 12mm f2.8 😊 I appreciate the reminder that I have it in my kit though I will try to use it over the weekend 😊
Thanks again keep the Vids coming 👍
looks like a nice sharp street photography lens -
Well done ! - subscribed & nice street shots of Brum too ! (VTID)
I have an XT10 with 2 kit lenses - looking to splash out on something new - maybe a wide 24 or a nifty fifty prime - but this 135 is interesting too - what would you recommend for a first investment ?
I tend to shoot portraits and landscapes, (doesn't everyone ?) but want to stretch my photography a bit more - but definitely need value for money and versatility......
How much did it cost to hire ? ( & was that Calumet on the Hagley Rd ? )
Really loving this lens.
You also have Canadian viewers btw..
Love your reviews Bro - have the 35mm F1.4 and 56mm F1.2 - nice optically but slow focusing - and 35mm a bit noise - but hate to have to go to F2.0 - so is the AF better then that of the 35mm and 56 ? I do have the 10-24 wide angle - and find 23mm be ideal although the 16mm F1.4 is on my radar - the 18 F2.8 just to slow -
Hoping you tell me Focus is much better then the 35mm F1.4 - but I will accept it being a bit slower then the F2.0 - just cant live without the Bokeh on F1.4 - keep videos coming
Lovely lens but jesus why is it so big ±D
i have resolved to the fact, im collecting the primes, got the 16mm then just got the 14mm, had the 35f2, im on a bicycle a lot, and have to keep the weight down, also i prefer the stly of shooting when i clip on a particular focal length im in that mode mentally, 14mm i resolve myself to looking for shots from that perspective, Its more expensive to be collecting fuji primes, over the zooms, i do want the 50-140 f2.8, thanks for the sample snaps
Is it quiet for video use?
Nice one. Have watched all your videos, but this is the one that finally made me subscribe. Now I have two Damians on my list - you and Lovegrove ;)
I suppose the f2 version would be the EVERYTHING one because it's also weather sealed, but I had and loved the 1.4 myself and oh the feeling... 🤗
Seen your 35/1.4 review.. and now this. Awesome.
Also would love to see comparison with Viltrox 23/1.4.
This lens along with the 16mm 1.4 on two X-pro3 bodies is my dream rig. It will happen this year!
(Moving from my film rig of two canon AT-1's with a 24mm and a 50mm)
great video Alex. What film simulation are you using? is it classic neg? I like the rendering of photos you showed. I owned 23 f2 that I hated, its bokeh was quite ugly and its fall-off nothing special. The 23mm f1.4 maybe has less bokeh than a 35mm 1.4 full frame lens, it's flat like you said, but it has some kind of 3Dimensonality that I can't understand. Maybe it's the gradual transition to focus, anyway it gives emphasis to the subject without sacrificing its background and environment.
I swear Japan is just a whole new level of aesthetics. The place, the people, the landscape, the city ...everything is just so picturesque
I’m impressed how could you easily asking people to taking picture of them. I got ticket to Japan on May 21 and hoping find on same experience just like you. Anyway all picture you posted are SOOC? Using XPro3?
The font choice is brilliant 😎
23mm is a good choice for every day shoot, not too wide and not too zoom either, if i only have to choose to only have 1 lens, probably i will take this one😄
The price doesnt match the performance, a lense that expensive shouldn't focus hunt like an old Canon kit lens
This is my 'Desert Island' Lens.
Sorry for the song being muted at the end guys. Youtube caught me 😂 Memes and 80's songs are a lifestyle choice.
The only thing I don’t like about this lens is none weather resistant
Haha I waited like an anime! Wait for the whole series to be out before I binge watch the whole series haha 😂
I am really enjoying the way you talk through your street photog thinking and process whilst also reviewing gear. It’s so much more interesting and useful than a regular pixel-peeping review IMHO.
I watched some of your videos before but with this one you clearly improved your style. ,You clearly put more work in it and i dont mean the memes. 🤗Keep it up and you will have a regular viewer with me.
I bought this lens when i started with fuji because i thought i would continue shooting weddings. But i never really got this one working for me. Maybe the second part of your video will keep me from selling it...
Your 35mm 1.4 review sold me on that, now you’re selling me on this smh lol. Great video as always!
Great video, Alex! My local store had a used 23mmf1.4 and I almost pulled the trigger, but I already have the 23mmf2 with WR and I quite enjoy shooting street in the rain, especially now in the fall/winter months to come, so I‘ll stick to that for now. Let‘s see if that‘s still true after Part 2 😂
11:39 is sick
