The Story Behind the Space Shuttle Columbia Recovery Mission
The Columbia Disaster Was Worse Than You Thought
In 2019, my wife and I had a tour of Mike at the Atlantis. He spoke very openly about the Columbia accident. Mike also said they could have saved the crew if they had known a landing was no longer possible. I bought his book on KSC that he signed. Mike also showed us around the remnants of Challenger and Columbia. I have great respect for this man and Mike in turn has great respect for the crew. Meeting him was a highlight of my life.
I just finished the book Bringing Columbia home and found it easy to read and I learned lots of things about Columbia I never knew, thank you for writing this wonderful book.
What condition was the crew's bodies, was there any pictures taken
The story is so great, deserves a movie!
NASA learned nothing from the disaster of Challenger; in both cases critical information was either ignored or kept secret and politics prevailed: in case of Challenger the O rings failure and the influence of low temperatures and in case of Columbia the footage of that piece of foam hitting the wing. Columbia crew had not been informed about it, they only knew about some missing tiles in the rear section on the cover of main engines, no one said a word about the possible wing problem and the crew were not even asked to inspect it e. g. by additional spacewalk. The idea that a piece of foam the size of a briefcase could have torn a hole in the leading edge of the wing was systematically rejected and it was the determination of one man who finally proved it in an experiment with air gun and a real space shuttle wing and only then did Nasa open their eyes. Challenger disaster could have been very easily prevented, Columbia not so easily, there was no procedure how help astronauts who were unable to reenter, fixing this sort of damage in space was impossible, rescue mission would be extremely difficult, but no one even tried, they were cleared for reentry hoping nothing would happen. To recap: in both cases Nasa engineers had the knowledge of the problem but chose to ignore it, so saying about lessons learned makes no sense.

Little Mammoth Media did The Big Space Shuttle video before the Columbia accident. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNlQ6gvin_s&t=1s
Good interviewer.
These guys are cold. Responsible for the deaths of 7 people, they seem oddly detached and don't address the fact that the foam was knocked off at launch!!
Where did they find the crew and the module
